How many teeth should your child actually have? The answer depends on their age!
As children grow, their smiles go through several important stages of development. Here's what parents should know:
20 Baby Teeth: Most children develop their full set of 20 primary teeth by around age 3. These teeth help with chewing, speech development, and holding space for permanent teeth.
Ages 6–12: Around age 6, children typically begin losing baby teeth as their permanent teeth start coming in. During this transition, it's completely normal to have a mixture of both.
28 Permanent Teeth: By approximately ages 12–13, most children have 28 permanent teeth, excluding wisdom teeth.
32 Adult Teeth: A complete adult set includes four wisdom teeth, which typically emerge between ages 17–25. However, not everyone develops all four wisdom teeth, and some never emerge.
Remember, every child's dental development is a little different! Regular pediatric dental visits help monitor tooth eruption, spacing, and overall oral development as your child grows.
At Tooth Clues, we're here to help parents understand every stage of their child's smile.
Now we're curious: Ask your child how many teeth they think they have and share their answer in the comments!
