The Delhi Police detained student and youth activists from left-leaning organisations Revolutionary Workers’ Party of India (RWPI) and Disha after they marched from Ramlila Maidan towards Jantar Mantar on Sunday, November 1. Soon after the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan, calling for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, these activists started marching from Ramlila Maidan towards the denotified protest site. They were later stopped and detained by the Delhi police.
Nearly 20 years after the release of Borat (2006), Sacha Baron Cohen has publicly apologized to the people of Kazakhstan for his controversial portrayal of the country. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, the British actor and comedian explained that Borat Sagdiyev was never intended to represent Kazakhstan or its people. “I want to apologize to the people of Kazakhstan for the first time ever, because Borat has got nothing to do with Kazakhstan,” Cohen said. He also revealed an interesting detail about the character’s origins. Before becoming the fictional Kazakh journalist audiences know today, Borat was originally developed as an Albanian character for the BBC. His nationality changed several times during development, including a version from Moldova. When the character eventually moved to HBO, Cohen needed another country. He chose Kazakhstan simply because he believed Western audiences knew very little about it. The decision caused controversy. Kazakhstan’s government strongly criticized the character, and officials threatened legal action in 2005. Around the release of the 2006 film, the country also launched an international advertising campaign to challenge its fictional portrayal. Cohen recalled receiving complaints from the Kazakh embassy and acknowledged that the objections were understandable. He emphasized that he respects Kazakhstan’s people and culture and never intended to cause them harm. The comedian maintained that the film’s real target was ignorance and prejudice, particularly the willingness of people to believe outrageous claims about a country they knew almost nothing about. Two decades later, Borat remains one of the most recognizable and controversial comedy films of the 2000s, continuing to raise questions about satire, stereotypes, and the line between comedy and cultural representation. What do you think about his apology nearly 20 years later?
Be Kind. Rewind. And… Look behind you! Upload a photo and use the prompt below to see your haunted VHS cover: A 1990s horror VHS cover, portrait (aspect ratio ~0.72). The Title is: “[TITLE],” with the tagline “[TAGLINE]” — never copy or rename a real cover. Show one strong central image of [SCENE] on a simple background, rendered as [MEDIUM: authentic 1980s airbrush/oil painting with period brushwork | 1990s period photograph with 35mm grain], with visible texture and at most 3-4 visual elements; the title treatment carries the design. Cast exactly one human from the uploaded photo, in PG-safe spooky register — wide eyes, surprise — with no blood, gore, wounds, or peril, and keep all geometry physically real and spatially simple. Letter the title in Spooky Minimal Text with a lurid period palette, then add the VHS badge, HI-FI STEREO text, tiny credits block, and worn rental edges.
