It’s estimated that around 80% of breast cancers are driven by excess estrogen. However, even in triple-negative breast cancer, estrogen also can play a role. Researchers “demonstrated that increasing the levels of circulating estrogens is sufficient to promote the formation and progression of ER-negative cancers while, pharmacologically inhibiting estrogen synthesis following pregnancy prevents ER-negative tumor formation.” (The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). Today, many women are estrogen dominant, and signs of estrogen dominance can be seen decades before a cancer diagnosis. Estrogen is one of the biggest factors driving gynecological issues including PMS, PCOS, endometriosis, fibrocystic breasts, etc. Estrogen is now ubiquitous in our environment: - xenoestrogens in personal care products - phytoestrogens in herbs, supplements, and foods like flax - seed oils and PUFAS which can mimic the effects of estrogen - birth control - estrogen only HRT Many women also have impaired detoxification pathways—especially in the liver—which makes it harder to break down and eliminate excess estrogen. Because of this, one of the best things we can do to prevent breast cancer is support healthy progesterone levels. Progesterone promotes cell differentiation and opposes the growth promoting effects of estrogen. It is one of the most protective, anticancer medicines we have. 💗

Symptoms and diagnoses are forms of feedback. They reflect how the body has been adapting to its environment over time. Healing from cancer often requires a significant shift in lifestyle. Many patients say, “Cancer was a wake-up call.” In practice, cancer and other chronic symptoms can act as error-correction signals, forcing attention to what the system has been compensating for. Cells continuously respond to their surroundings, and that state is not permanent. Under different conditions, cells can regain regulation and tumor growth can be restrained. But healing requires addressing the full terrain: nutrient status, diet, hormones, metabolism, emotions, stress, and the environmental inputs the body is responding to. 💗💗💗 #breastcancer #healing
Women under 50 now face an 82% higher cancer incidence compared to men in the same age group. If we’re living in the same environments, eating similar diets, and exposed to many of the same stressors, what’s driving the difference? The answer lies in our hormones. Today, women are being exposed to higher amounts of estrogen than ever before. Women naturally have higher levels of estrogen compared to men. Estrogen encourages cell growth and division. This is needed for reproduction and pregnancy, but it can also stimulate the excessive cell division we see in cancer. When estrogen is chronically elevated, or not properly balanced by progesterone, it can create a hormonal environment that increases the risk for cancer. There has been a steady rise in invasive breast cancer, which is often driven by estrogen and treated by blocking estrogen. Breast cancer has been increasing by about 1% each year since 2012, and by 1.4% annually in women under 50. Uterine cancer is also on the rise, another hormonally-driven cancer. From 2013 to 2022 the death rate rose by 1.5% per year. There are several possible contributors: higher rates of excess body fat, delayed childbirth, and having fewer children overall, but estrogen plays a role in all of these factors. Normally estrogen is balanced by progesterone. In a healthy internal environment, cancer is rare in the young. But today, women are not only producing estrogen internally, but also being exposed to additional estrogens from environmental toxins, hormonal birth control, processed foods, and plastics. They are told to eat nuts, seeds, seed oils, and vegan diets high in polyunsaturated fats, all of which are estrogenic. This stacked exposure, on top of what the body already produces, can tip the balance and contribute to excessive cell growth, the foundation of many cancers. This doesn’t mean estrogen is inherently “bad.” It means its effects depend on context, balance, and timing. Understanding this is part of engaging with complex biological realities. If we want to reverse these trends, we need to take an honest look at the environment we are living in.

7 inexpensive tools for breast cancer! 1. Aspirin. Aspirin inhibits prostaglandins, inflammatory molecules that can stimulate tumor growth, angiogenesis, and estrogen production through aromatase. This makes it particularly interesting in hormone-sensitive breast cancer research. 2. Natural progesterone is a “true anti-estrogen.” Estrogen stimulates cell proliferation while progesterone induces cell differentiation, supports mitochondrial function, reduces inflammation, and protects against cancer. It also does not carry the same toxic effects as other anti-estrogens.(PMID: 28713912) 3. Doxycycline. Cancer stem-like cells can depend on mitochondrial protein synthesis for survival. Doxycycline interferes with this process, and studies have found reductions in a breast cancer stem-cell marker following treatment. (PMID: 30364293) 4. Low-dose naltrexone helps regulate immune function and influence the opioid growth factor pathway, which plays a role in controlling cell proliferation. Studies suggest it may help inhibit breast cancer cell growth and support the effects of other cancer treatments. (PMID: 38539570) 5. Vitamin D helps regulate cell growth, differentiation, and immune function. Sun avoidance and low vitamin D is consistently associated with breast cancer. (PMID: 34810207) 6. Niacinamide plays an important role in cellular energy production, which is impaired in cancer. It can inhibit PARP, an enzyme cancer cells use to repair damaged DNA. In studies, it reduced breast cancer cell survival and increased sensitivity to conventional treatment. (PMID: 25504347) 7. Sodium Bicarbonate. Many tumors create an acidic environment that can support invasion and metastasis. Sodium bicarbonate has been investigated for its ability to raise extracellular tumor pH and studies show it reduces breast cancer metastasis. (PMID: 19276390)
