17 years ago, his motorcycle sank after barely 20 metres. This time, China’s Zhang Xue rode across open water for 40.74 kilometres, setting a Guinness World Record and turning a long-pending dream into reality. Zhang, founder of Chinese motorcycle manufacturer ZXMOTO, achieved the feat on October 25 in his hometown of Mayang in Hunan province. Riding a specially modified MX450, he surpassed the previous record of 31.8 kilometres for the greatest distance travelled over open water by a modified motorcycle. Footage of the attempt has since circulated widely online. The bike’s ability to skim across the river came from extensive modifications. It was fitted with amphibious skis, a larger fuel tank and additional waterproofing. After building speed on land, the motorcycle moved across the surface with its front ski providing steering and its rear tyre pushing water backwards for propulsion. Zhang and his team spent five months preparing the machine, repeatedly testing and adjusting its flotation, waterproofing and power setup to improve stability. Rescue boats and medical teams remained on standby during the record attempt. Guinness officials checked GPS tracking, timing data and audiovisual evidence before adjudicator Xiong Wen confirmed the achievement. For Zhang, the achievement closed a chapter that began in 2009. Then aged 22, he attempted the challenge four times, falling into the water on every run. His best effort covered just 20 metres. Seventeen years later, he returned to his hometown and took that unfinished dream beyond 40 kilometres.
