In Umani Springs, everyone now walks at ‘Mwezi pace’! At just five days old, our tiniest girl can’t travel very far or very fast — but the herd is very, very happy to slow down to her baby speed.

Really, they’re just happy, period. There’s a definite air of joy in Umani right now — elephants always celebrate a new baby, but especially one born to Murera!

In case you missed the news: Last Thursday, Murera gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Every baby born to a rewilded orphan is a miracle, but that miracle is compounded for Murera.

Presenting the Umani Boys’ Club! Maktao, Kapei, and Mwashoti are the three big bulls in our core Umani herd and, amidst so many females, they know to stick together. Each has a distinct role to play: Kapei (six years old) is the resident mischief maker, while Maktao (eight) is his easygoing sidekick. Mwashoti, at the sage old age of 12, is their team leader, mentor, peacekeeper, and ambassador to the big girls. While most bulls become boisterous in their adolescence, Mwashoti has always been unfalteringly polite and conscientious. Case in point: The other day, Kapei and Maktao were tussling in the dust while Mwana relaxed nearby. Mwashoti wasn’t involved — until he saw Kapei attempt to clamber atop the young girl. Not one to stand for such unsportsmanlike behaviour on his watch, he intervened and gave the boys their marching orders. Will Maktao and Kapei grow up to be ‘gentle uncles’ like Mwashoti? Only time will tell — but as the adage goes, with age comes wisdom, so there’s hope yet! — Mwashoti, Maktao, and Kapei are all orphans — Mwashoti suffered a terrible poaching injury as a baby, Maktao lost his family through human-wildlife conflict, and Kapei was a victim of the drought. There’s something extra special about this scene. When Chyulu returned home to introduce us to her brand new baby girl, she was accompanied by nanny-in-charge, Lulu. Lulu is the eldest daughter of Lualeni, Chyulu’s friend and a fellow ex-orphan. When she was born back in 2018, it was Chyulu who stepped in as her top nanny. Now, eight years later, Lulu is returning the favour to her old auntie. Taroha and Maxwell, enjoying a morning chinwag! Taroha (the elephant) always treats Max with such reverence — he clearly holds the rhino in high regard, and perhaps even understands that he is blind and needs a soft touch. Everyone loves Maxwell, but Taroha shares a particularly special bond with the blind black rhino. As he heads into the forest for the day, Taroha always makes a point to pop by Max’s stockade for a few minutes. Sometimes, the gentle elephant even sneaks back to spend more time with him! — At the wise old age of 20, Maxwell is our Nursery patriarch. Because he is blind and wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild, he has a forever home with us. With a year at the Nursery under her belt, Alia is reaching new heights! We rescued Alia last October. We’re not sure how she came to be orphaned, but she had clearly been on her own and struggling for quite some time. Initially, she was a shy girl who often chose to be on her own — but as she recovered from her trauma, she really started to shine. It’s been such a delight to meet the true Alia. Quiet but bright, she has emerged as a talented and much-loved nanny. When she isn’t looking after the little ones, she is busy exploring the Nursery. This morning, she was feeling especially intrepid and climbed the platform to enjoy some tasty, usually-out-reach greens! — Alia has already come so far, but her journey with us is just beginning.
