I’m worried about Mississippi. Your GOP are going to gerrymander to keep black folks out of their representation.

Mississippi and Louisiana we see your blue hearts! We believe and support you! (From happily purple NC … despite gerrymandering) we can do it.

This week we replayed one of our favorite episodes from last year: a conversation with Mississippi-born writer and MacArthur fellow @kieselaymon on the beauty of his grandma’s garden, Emmett Till, Maurice Sendak, and his first children’s book. Listen to our producer @paradis.j speaking with Kiese Laymon at the link in bio or on Outside/In, on the podcast app of your choice.

Quotes: “I respect all of the books about growing up in cities, but I just want to read more books about particularly Black children exploring and experimenting with the natural world, for better or for worse. Insects, you know. Crawdads. Mosquitoes. Locusts.”

“I wanted an artist who loved art, gardens and young Black people, young Black boys, enough to create not horrific stuff, but the kind of suspense that is bodily.”

I wrote to Addie. She wrote back. 4/6/27 Good, God

Today marks a year since The Wilderness was released. A year of so much joy connecting with readers and surprisingly few cancelled flights. I finally opened my box of paperbacks (out Sept 29) and am glad I said I wanted all 40 copies so that I can donate some to incarcerated readers (did you know that some prisons only allow paperbacks?) and give away a few online too (more on that in a few weeks). In October I’m doing an event in Brooklyn with the one and only @chaninicholas and another at @nypl with @vinsoncunningham who is my brother in my heart. Come see us, and thank you for reading 💜❤️‍🔥

Heavy by Kiese Laymon, A Man of Two Faces by Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Something We Said by Elizabeth Stordeur Pryor each explore how the past lives inside us. Through memoir, history, and deeply personal storytelling, the three writers confront race, family, identity, memory, trauma, and the stories we inherit. Together, the books ask a compelling question: How do we reckon with the histories that shape us while finding the freedom to tell our own stories and find our personal and collective joy?

I cannot recommend these books enough in this moment of seemingly heightened madness when we need to find our humanity even more than ever.

I invite you to read them to help find your joy.

Coming home has never felt so empty. I still expect to see you waiting for me, to be greeted by the little soul who made every home feel like home. Instead, I am met with silent echoes. It’s easier when the world is loud enough to distract me from your absence. But in the quiet hours, the midnight panic attacks & the mornings I wake without you, grief finds me. That’s when I cry for you to come back. Even in death, you are still teaching me about love, loss & the unbearable beauty of having something so precious that its absence can break you. You saved me from death more times than people will ever know. My greatest accomplice, my little shadow through every version of myself. Seventeen years of traveling, beach days, sleepless nights, laughter & tears. You witnessed parts of me no human ever will. You knew me before I knew myself & loved me through every person I had to become. The greatest blessing of my life was the day you let me save yours, never knowing you would spend the next seventeen years rescuing me. For that, I’m forever yours.
What I would give to hold you one last time. To kiss the soft fur behind your ear. To simply look at you from across the room, doing absolutely nothing, just existing in the same world as me. I would give anything for one more ordinary day. A piece of my heart left this earth with you & that space will always belong to you. Seventeen years will never feel like enough when I wanted a lifetime. The hardest part of loving you is that I was your entire lifetime & now I have to live the rest of mine without you. So find me again. In this life, the next & every existence that follows. Find me wherever souls go when their bodies can no longer hold all the love they carry. If we are given a thousand lifetimes, I hope you choose me in every single one, because I will spend every lifetime looking for you.

Come back, love of my life. Please, come back. ❤️‍🩹🕊️🥺
