How do you know who you actually are? ‘Stay true to yourself.’ ‘Be authentic.’ ‘You do you.’ But how do you actually know who that ‘you’ is?

Well, the ancient Greek philosopher Plotinus might give us a solution, because Plotinus is famous for giving us what’s called the ‘negative way,’ or the ‘via negativa.’ And this says that if you want to find or understand something, you should subtract all of the things that are not that thing.

So, for example, if you want to decide what to wear for work, you should subtract all of the things that you don’t want to wear. And the thing that you have left, ideally, is the thing that you have to wear.

So Plotinus asks us to imagine our authentic self as like a statue contained within a block of marble. And the art of finding that statue is about chipping away all of those things you don’t care about. Chip away the things you do for money or for praise, or because you have to. Chip away the chores, the jobs, and the responsibilities. What you are left with is your authentic being, and if you do more of that, you will thrive.

In other words, you need to reduce. Cut out all of the impositions and pressures in life. Cut out all of the have-tos and must-dos. Cut out all of the things that you don’t actually want to do, because what you have left will be you.

But in all seriousness, it was great to see @nycmayor again, meet @aoc for the first time, and thank Gov. @govkathyhochul for passing MAiD in New York State. When my husband was dying of terminal cancer in 2022, he wished he had the bodily autonomy to end his life on his terms instead of suffering from immense pain every single day while his body slowly starved him to death. It was so insane to us that right across the river, just a few miles away, NJ allowed terminally ill patients to end their lives on their own terms while in New York—the state Rob was born, raised, lived, and died in—that option wasn’t available to him. It was the ultimate betrayal.

Earlier this year, Hochul signed off on legislation that offers this option to terminally ill New Yorkers, and it finally went into law a few months ago. While Rob and I both wished he was able to do this when he was living out his final months, I’m glad other people in Rob’s situation will have access to more control over the end of their lives. We understand it is cruel to force our household pets to suffer from painful terminal illnesses. I’m glad this common sense is being extended to terminally ill human beings who can decide for themselves how they want to go out when fate has already made the ultimate decision for them.

(And I’m sure Rob would be glad that his fellow WNYer did all of this…on top of finally getting the congestion pricing program up and running, so thanks for that too!)
