Being at home is the best peace in the world

Just two miles from the NYC Marathon finish line, 24-year-old runner Rachel Apa suddenly collapses and never makes it home.

Rachel Apa, a former college field hockey player, had spent months training for her first marathon when she collapsed in Central Park. Her father tracked her progress from Pennsylvania, sending encouragement at every mile.

After Apa texted him “Ow” and then “Ow ow,” his final message went unanswered. Despite efforts by bystanders, emergency responders and doctors, Apa died later Sunday evening. Her father says she suffered from rhabdomyolysis, a rare, life-threatening condition that causes muscle tissue to break down.

Apa was running to raise money for Parkinson’s disease research in honor of her late grandfather, raising more than $22,000.

“Isn’t everyone on the autistic spectrum?” Spoiler: no.

I hear this all the time, and it can feel incredibly invalidating. The spectrum isn’t a line from less autistic to more autistic. You might relate to some autistic traits, but that doesn’t mean everyone is on the spectrum.

I find it more helpful to talk about support levels. I’m level one, so I have lower support needs than someone who’s level three, who might need round-the-clock care, for example. That doesn’t make one of us more autistic than the other. My support needs may be lower, but autism still has a huge impact on my life.

Just as every neurotypical person is different, every neurodivergent person is too, and everyone’s experience is valid.

Save this for the next time you need to explain why we aren’t all on the spectrum ❤️
