The grind is back, baby 🎮

World of Warcraft (WoW) is taking players back to 2004. @oiioxford’s @thomas.hakman explains why nostalgia keeps bringing us back to the games we love.

With thanks to @christchurchoxford, for allowing us to film in their Upper Library.

The Upper Library - the perfect place to have filmed this. A very interesting analysis of history, nostalgia, and Warcraft!

WRONG. The 20-year history of the private server community—which Blizzard constantly had to shut down—has proven time and again that millions of players prefer a slower, low-definition, vintage version of the game. Why? Because it is, in fact, the BETTER GAME. They shut down Nostalrius to launch WoW Classic, and they have shut down Turtle WoW and other private servers for WoW Forever.

Os there Is word for when we anticipate something that's so good it'll give us nostalgia in the future because we know it can replicate the nostalgia we had? That's WoW Forever for me, an opportunity to play wow for the first time once more

Its funny how no one brings up nostalgia when they see people bring out a chess set or monopoly, or when someone decides to rewatch Jurassic Park. Maybe great games are just timeless.

Or it's just a good game... Better than the modern version...

Nostalgia having been a diagnosis that pathologized experience makes you wonder about what else we are pathologizing now! In Portuguese we have had the word SAUDADE for this, and in that language it also includes GRATITUDE for having experienced it. You should also have mentioned something deeper about identity from an existential perspective, not just cognitive/affective. It's not only how it made us feel or how we remember it, but WHO WE WERE at that time, what WE WENT THROUGH in the game and around it, socially, experientially, etc. You also miss the gaming side of things: WoW Forever has many changes and in that it offers more than the MUSEUM/ARCHIVE version of WoW Classic, which for example did NOT APPEAL to many because they already lived it!
