đ¨Lindsey Graham was right. In 2016 he warned that nominating Donald Trump would destroy the Republican Partyâand that they would deserve it. Ten years later, the Trumpocalypse has arrived in full.
Democrats have seized both chambers of Congress. The House flipped decisively, installing Hakeem Jeffries as the first Black Speaker and handing Democrats real power to investigate ICE, the Epstein files, block Trumpâs agenda, and reassert congressional war powers. The Senate is now Democratic-controlled as well, with a net gain that includes historic firsts: the first Muslim senator in Abdul El-Sayed, the first woman senator from South Carolina in Annie Andrews, and the end of Susan Collinsâs 30-year tenure after Troy Jacksonâs working-class upset in Maine. Trump-backed candidates fell across the mapâfrom Texas to Ohio to Iowaâwhile progressive insurgents held and expanded their beachheads.
Republicans spent hundreds of millions on attack ads smearing candidates over their faith, their names, and their âfar-leftâ âcommunistâ platforms. They lost anyway. Trumpâs personal involvement and the partyâs lockstep loyalty to him produced the exact self-inflicted wound Graham predicted. The results are not a modest correction; they are a repudiation. Suburban and working-class voters who once delivered for the GOP abandoned candidates who spent more time defending Trump than addressing costs, wages, or healthcare.
Grahamâs tweet was a prophecy of its own making. The Republican Party chose Trump, doubled down through every scandal and policy failure, and is now living with the consequences: a minority in both chambers, a president constrained by Democratic majorities, and even large swaths of the South. They got destroyed. And as Graham said in 2016, they deserve it.
