What a humbling experience lol
Every year, heavy snowfall and avalanches shut the dangerous Zojila Pass, cutting Ladakh off from the rest of India for months. But that long-standing reality is now closer to changing. Engineers have completed the final breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel, finishing excavation of the 13.5-km tunnel being built at an altitude of nearly 11,500 feet. Once operational, the tunnel will provide all-weather road connectivity to Ladakh, ending the region’s dependence on a pass that remains vulnerable to snow, landslides, and avalanches. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The tunnel is likely to transform life in the high-altitude region by ensuring smoother movement of essential supplies, boosting trade, and opening Ladakh to tourism even during harsh winter months. But its biggest importance may be strategic. Ladakh lies close to India’s sensitive frontier with China, making year-round access crucial for defence movement and military preparedness. The tunnel is expected to help faster movement of troops, weapons, equipment, and supplies in all seasons. Officials and infrastructure experts have described the Zojila Tunnel as one of India’s most important strategic road projects because it can keep Ladakh connected even when winter shuts the mountains. The work, however, has been anything but easy. Peda Subbaiah, Director of the Zojila Project, said the team had to battle extreme weather, difficult terrain, and high-altitude conditions. He said engineers used the Austrian drill-and-blast method, which allows the tunnel to be shaped as excavation progresses. He also called it the world’s longest high-altitude tunnel. With tunnelling now complete, the project will enter its next phase, including road surfacing, ventilation, lighting, safety systems, and other internal works needed before the tunnel can open. Harpal Singh, CEO and Project Head, said the tunnel will reduce travel time across the Zojila Pass from nearly three-and-a-half hours to just 20 minutes. He added that the remaining work is expected to be completed within 18 months.
