One of the most dangerous things about manipulation is that it often comes from people we love and trust. Because we love them, we don’t always question the narrative. We hear their side, feel their emotions, and sometimes adopt their perspective without ever asking a simple question:

“But what did you do?”

Growing up, whenever I complained about someone, my mama would stop me and ask that question. It wasn’t because she didn’t believe me. It was because she wanted me to examine my own contribution, biases, and blind spots before making someone else the villain.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that not everyone talks about others to tell the truth. Sometimes people create narratives to keep you from discovering the truth about them. Sometimes they want to isolate you from someone who knows too much. Sometimes they don’t want you forming a relationship that threatens the control, access, or influence they have over you. That’s why discernment matters, friend!

Love your people, but don’t abandon critical thinking. Support your people, but don’t become a participant in their emotional narratives without facts. And don’t let loyalty blind you to the possibility that there may be another side to the story.

Not everyone who brings you information is bringing you TRUTH.

my beautiful mum passed away. it feels strange and scary to be sharing this so publicly, but it feels even stranger and scarier to carry on as if this hasn't happened. you can prepare yourself for the worst, but it doesn't make it any easier when it's finally time to say goodbye forever. and it feels so bittersweet to say goodbye to you, because as much as i miss you more than anything and as painful as this is, i know you're at peace and you get to sleep soundly forever.

mum, i inherited my dark sense of humour from you, which is what's going to get me through this every day. i inherited my good taste (in everything) from you - i grew up thinking i had the chicest and coolest mum ever, and i was right. i (thankfully) inherited your cooking skills and whenever i eat anything italian, all i think is how it isn't anywhere near as good as yours (especially your pasta and your tiramisu). i inherited your sense of style and you're the reason why 90% of my wardrobe is black. i also inherited your love for silly reality tv and to think that we'll never again be sat on the sofa giggling at the tv and eating snacks - something so small but something that made us both so happy, just because we were together - makes me and the little girl inside of me so sad. but all i can do is treasure the good memories we have and hold on to them forever, as tightly as i can. i wish you could've truly understood how much everybody in your life loved and continues to love you, and i'm hoping you can feel that love from wherever you are now.

whenever i get a whiff of snow fairy or black orchid, i'll think of you. thank you for being my best friend for so many years of my life and thank you for fighting for as long as you could. i'll still text you good night and that i love you before i go to sleep for as long as i can, and i know that you're somewhere saying it back. i love you endlessly and you'll live inside of me forever, like i lived inside of you. ciao bella ♥️
