Divyanshu Joshi, a 26-year old Delhi-based model, drowned while on location prior to an ad shoot for Kartik Research. He was also a former retail manager for the brand. The tragedy occurred at Pettamala, a stone quarry that was shut down decades ago after multiple deaths. While the quarry is off limits, locals reportedly enter the area sometimes for bathing, washing clothes, or recreation. It is known for scenic beauty but also for dangerously deep pools which have been called ‘death traps’ because of low temperatures and an overgrowth of aquatic vegetation. In 2017, three students drowned in pools so deep that scuba divers sent to recover the bodies found the conditions challenging. Kartik Research, the popular Delhi-based brand that was an LVMH semi-finalist in 2023, planned to do an ad shoot at Pettamala the following day, and was scouting the location when Divyanshu apparently entered the water, got out, and then went back in, slipping suddenly from the shallow edge into a deep chasm. Video taken of the incident shows the young model struggling to stay afloat. The brand had not acquired permission to shoot at Pettamala, and reports of the incident have varied, with some claiming that the brand’s founder dove in to rescue Divyanshu. “As inaccurate accounts of this tragedy continue to circulate, we wish to clarify that Divyanshu was in Kerala as part of a seasonal photo shoot and was not participating in any swimming related activity as part of the production,” Kartik Research posted on their Instagram this week. Many in the fashion industry are noting how the incident reflects their personal experiences on set. Safety is often overlooked on photoshoots, especially with smaller indie brands that are tasked with generating powerful creative despite budgeting and time constraints. How many fashion shoots take place everyday in impromptu or even illegal locations? How many times has a model neglected to advocate for their own health and safety (mental or physical) because they worried it would reflect poorly on them? Divyanshu’s tragic and untimely death should be a wake up call to the industry.
Should abortion be treated as homicide? If a man shoots a pregnant woman and kills her & the child, he’s charged with double homicide in most states—because that baby is a human life. But if the mother has an abortion…nothing happens… @read_the_lion
