Top Five things I learned in my first year as an ER nurse: 1. You will have to let some patients unalive, and that’s okay. Hospitals have really strong legal counsel and will fight for you if anything goes wrong, just be sure to say it was an accident. If family members say it was negligence, there’s actually a lot you can do to argue that they’re lying or misremembering because of emotional distress. Take a deep breath, and remember it’s not the end of the world for you. 2. My hottest take is 99.99% of the time it IS just a headache. It’s an ectopic pregnancy or something maybe like ONCE, but I swear most of the time when women come in with pain they are: bored, hungry, or tired. Put them on a saline drip and tell them it’s for antinausea or something and they’ll discharge in like two hours. 3. If you’re going to borrow anything (Vicodin, wipes, etc) to take home, you don’t need to announce it, just be careful you’re only taking enough that it’s not noticeable. Everyone does it, just make sure there’s enough to go around for the patients too. 4. All hospitals are haunted. If weird sh*t starts happening between 2-5 am, it’s probably that. 5. Learned this one the hard way: DO NOT hook up with admin. Things are not like on Grey’s lol! HR will get jealous in the real world and they will not take your side.
