How similar are you to a frog or a bird? A new study led by McGill Biology postdoctoral researcher Logan James and professors Sarah Woolley and Jon Sakata explores whether humans share acoustic preferences with other animals. In an online game, participants listened to pairs of sounds and selected the one they preferred. The results suggest that we may, in fact, share similar acoustic preferences with other animals. We’re super excited to share our newfound love for … listening to birds!! Well, we’ve always loved listening to birds, but what’s got us really excited is a nifty app that identifies bird species by their calls! All you need is your phone and this simple app to be on the road to birding. Huge bonus, you can also help scientists do conservation work while you’re listening to the birds. Read more in our blog post, ‘Learning to Listen’ at https://spudniklab.com/how-a-bird-call-app-is-empowering-conservation/ or click on the link in bio! #conservation #birding #birdweather #citizenscience #biodiversity
We were at the park today and started hearing this weird humming in the distance… At first I thought it was some kind of deep vibration in the air. But the closer we got, the louder it got… and then we found it. A little marshy area FULL of frogs—like thousands of them—all singing at once 🐸 The sound was deafaning. You can feel it in your chest when you’re standing there. It’s one of the wildest sounds I’ve ever experienced. Nature’s version of white noise. If you’ve got a few minutes this week, go check out Secor Metropark—head toward the cemetery and just follow the sound. My video does NOT do it justice. #natureiswild #ohio #metroparks #wildlife #mindblown #springvibes #reelsviral
We all like lower sounds and trills and clicks 🥹 we are all frogs and birds and mosquitos 🥹
Birds make a lot of sounds — so many that author and illustrator Becca Rowland had a hard time keeping them straight. That was until Becca began picking up on familiar noises in common bird calls — like when they heard a dog’s squeaky toy in the trees. Now she’s compiled her fun and functional findings in a new guide called Bird Talk: Hilariously Accurate Ways to Identify Birds by the Sounds they Make. Ever wondered how much a tiny bird actually weighs? Nature’s engineering is truly mind-blowing when you scale it down to the snack aisle. This brilliant visual by Glenys Norquay perfectly illustrates the delicate reality of our garden friends using the universal unit of measurement: Skittles. The Goldcrest, Europe’s smallest bird, tips the scales at a mere five Skittles (approx. 5–6g). That’s less than the weight of a 20p coin! Moving up the "rainbow," a Wren is about six Skittles, while a Robin—which looks quite plump in your garden—weighs in at roughly 18–20 candies. Even the "heavier" Greenfinch doesn't even make it to a full 45g sharing bag. It’s a gentle reminder of how fragile these high-energy creatures are, especially during cold snaps when they can lose a significant percentage of their body mass overnight. Next time you see a Goldcrest flitting through the pines, just imagine five little yellow Skittles with wings!
