I got up early before work, poured myself a cup of ambition and finalized the plan for the Dream More tribute show tomorrow night at @jolenejoleneatl. I’m so grateful to be part of Atlanta’s drag community, but imposter syndrome still creeps in (I feel it at work as an academic too). This morning I needed to look back at how much I’ve grown. 2011: Halloween with my friend Robert, like every year. I was happy, and I knew I had so much to learn about creating an illusion. 2019: My first paid drag appearance, for an Atlanta organization whose outgoing leader loved Dolly. I had just turned 40. I had audacity to say yes! Dolly said you’ll never do a whole lot unless you try, and that if she’d been born a guy she’d be a drag queen... here we were. During early COVID, I had this red gingham dress made for fun, and in December 2022 a friend asked me to do a Dolly Christmas brunch at her hotel. She really trusted me, and gay audacity struck again: eight songs, three sets, all by myself. A bestie with an incredible talent for makeup and hair made sure I looked the part. He’s the reason I still do drag. He’s taught me so much and has been a real companion on this journey. As drag bans were debated in Tennessee, I doubled down with brunches through 2023 and posed in that gingham in front of the Ryman. In 2024, opening night of a local 9 to 5 musical made me feel so good. I was a drag queen! These days I do my own makeup almost all the time and keep my wigs looking pretty good, but I’m always learning. Tomorrow night I get to share the stage with entertainers I’ve been a fan of during my time in Atlanta… well before I was producing shows. The growth isn’t just in the drag. Parton Waters has made me more confident in and out of drag. She’s an extension of me to build community, raise awareness, and play. I’ve loved Dolly since I was a kid. I never wanted to impersonate her, I was just inspired by her love for life. Now, after her passing, I get to honor her as a human and an entertainer. There are so many layers here.
