We are sobbing over here knowing our baby turns one next month! So many special memories made over the past 11 months. God has such a special life planned ahead for this little boy. If your baby turns into a tiny tornado every night around 4-9pm, we call this the witching hour and it's HARD! Trying to manage this until your partner gets home can drain you. Out of my 3, the first one was the worst, and now I know why. I tell my clients, what you’re seeing is the nervous system hitting its limit. The 3 most common reasons for witching hour meltdowns — and why some babies don’t struggle as much are 1. Overtired from poor daytime sleep. When naps are short, late, or inconsistent, cortisol rises all day long. An overtired baby doesn’t get sleepy — they get wired. 2. Overstimulated nervous system. By the end of the day your baby has absorbed lights, sounds, faces, movement, and transitions nonstop. Their brain is still immature and can’t “power down” easily yet. 3. They’re hungry and need to cluster feed. Evening fussiness is often biology, not sleep failure. Babies naturally want to cluster feed at night to boost milk supply and tank up before longer stretches of sleep. When we try to stretch feeds instead of allowing this, babies escalate. 3 Gentle Shifts That Calm Witching hour I teach my clients... Step 1: Protect daytime sleep like medicine. Earlier naps + age-appropriate wake windows prevent cortisol buildup. Better naps = calmer evenings. Contact naps on the move are great in the newborn phase. Step 2: Create a “nervous system sunset” After 4–5pm: dim lights, quieter voices, slower movement, fewer people. You’re teaching the brain that night is coming. Listen to calming music do some self-care with your baby on you. This could be a mini facial, could be a nap, or a nice walk outside. Step 3: Lean into evening feeds, not away from them Allow cluster feeding. It stabilizes blood sugar, calms the nervous system, and actually improves night sleep. Some babies seem “easier” at night because their sleep, stimulation, and feeding rhythms are working with biology — not against it. Try these things and see if you see improvement in a week or two.
