Surprise, surprise. I gave a Grand Rounds Lecture on Medical Racism this morning. While it may come as a surprise to some, the birth of medical experimentation in the US had its roots in enslavement. Subsequent to that the US Public Health Service was directly responsible for the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and the US Government was directly responsible for forced sterilizations on hundreds of THOUSANDS of women. Then they denied home loans, forced Black citizens into redlined areas, divested funds from those areas, created food deserts and food swamps and had the audacity to attribute co-morbidities such as high blood pressure and diabetes to “genetics.” Check out the term “weathering” when you have a moment.
