“Herding of the Cows” (1965) by Bob Thompson reimagines a canvas by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) entitled “The Rainbow Landscape” (1636). As is often the case, Thompson retains many of the original painting’s structural elements but uses streamlined form and saturated color to modify its spatiality and emphasis. Rubens celebrated agricultural abundance with farmhands and milkmaids tending their animals beneath the arch of a rainbow. Thompson transforms the luminous double-arched rainbow, a symbol of fleeting beauty, into a curve flecked with many of these same brilliant hues.🌈 Thompson reimagines the landscape using vibrant swathes of color, radically reclaiming an “Old Master” artwork using his own visual language. In celebration of Black History Month, Black Moon Trio will perform at the Logan Center for the Arts on Feb. 22 at 8 pm to celebrate the legacy of Bob Thompson’s work through a combination of jazz and chamber music. UPDATE: Confirmed! This is celebrated African American painter Bob Thompson, who was studying @bostonu in 1956. Wow. Watching @chrisseufert reels at 3:23 AM I came across this clip. My heart stopped. Is that American figurative artist Bob Thompson dancing? I’ve only seen one picture of him in Provincetown. He came here in the 1950s and studied the art of Jan Muller (who was already deceased). You can see Mullers influence in all of Thompsons work. These clips are extracted from home movies created by Charles Braun in the 1950s. Filmmaker Christopher Seufert (nephew) has them on his incredible YouTube channel.
