Breakneck Ridge is one of the most popular trails in the United States. The legend of how it got its name was originally recounted in an 1882 book. According to the book, the villagers in the area near Beacon and Cold Spring were terrorized by a wild bull. One day they set out to chase the bull, which subsequently fell off a cliff and broke its neck — hence Breakneck Ridge and its neighboring mountain Bull Hill getting their monikers. Here’s a great summer day trip from NYC: a hike at Breakneck Ridge followed by an afternoon in Beacon NY! This is what you’ll do: take the Metro North train to Breakneck Ridge from Grand Central. Go on a hike: ours ended up being 7 miles but there are different shorter options as well. The one we did involved a lot of rock scrambles so its not really for the faint of heart, but we had amazing views and even climbed an old fire tower in Beacon. Tip: bring bug spray - some areas further into the hike definitely got a little buggy. From there, you can walk to Beacon. Its such a cute town and and it literally reminded me of Gilmore Girls. There are so many cute local shops, from a soap store to vintage clothing stores and more (loved @beaconbathandbubble!). We also had an amazing burger from Beacon Falls Café (@beaconfallscafe). There are also a bunch of great breweries including @hudsonvalleybrewery & @industrialartsbrewing! You can explore the town and relax and spend the night at a hotel, or take the train back. We did this as a day trip but would definitely want to spend the night next time. If you want to splurge, a great hotel to go to is @roundhousebeacon. PS round trip train tickets are about $30 per person and there is no fee to hike. We probably spent around $55 per person all day with train, a meal & a little shopping, but you could easily bring a picnic as well! We saw a bunch of people doing this and kinda regretted only bringing snacks on our hike. Highly recommend this as a great summer weekend or day trip.
