#Brushwork
With their *technical* names of course.
1. The Scratchy: very little paint on a bristle brush. Leaves very little pigment behind, making it perfect for initial landmark finding. 🚨 VERY important not to add a bunch of gamsol/paint thinner here 🚨
2. The One Without a Brush At All: the brushes you were born with, your fingers. Proceed with caution, this route gets messy fast. Also potentially toxic. Maybe not a good idea.
3. The Side to Side and Up & Down: either follow the form or paint against it to get the feeling of fullness and form you desire. Has the ability to appear visually fast or slow.
4. The Backwards Bad Boy: a little rebellious. Who said brushes were supposed to only be used one way? This one has you looking at your brush collection with new eyes.
5. The Itty Bitty Shape Definer: the most alluring stroke of all that we must resist pulling out until the end. Little known fact: can be made with big or small brushes.
If you’re curious, my favorite brushes are all compiled in a very neat set from @rosemarybrushes , the Stephanie Thomson set, available on their site! I agonized over making it versatile and also affordable.

This Chinese brush painting pushes the boundaries of traditional ink work in a way you've probably never seen before. Blending classic tools with unexpected, modern techniques to prove that centuries-old brushwork can still surprise us today.

This portrait feels alive because the structure is solid and the paint stays free. Notice how the clear value shapes hold the form together while the scraped passages add movement and energy. A good lesson for painters is to build the structure first and let the brushwork loosen up later, beautifully handled by @anna_bernadskaya. #oilpainting #portraitpainting #figurativeart #paintingprocess #arteducation
