Cassidy Freeman on working with Tom Welling as both good and bad Clark on Smallville 🎙️
A while back on Love it Film, we sat down with Cassidy Freeman, best known for playing Tess Mercer on Smallville. She spoke with Jamie about what it was like acting opposite Tom Welling, and how naturally he embodied Clark Kent on set.
She also talks about reuniting years later to work together again on their new film Chasing Summer, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on 26 January 2026, and how fun it was stepping back on set with him after so much time.

#Sundance2026: The #ChasingSummer cast Iliza Shlesinger, Cassidy Freeman and Garrett Wareing agree their favorite part of Sundance is the camaraderie and the "we made it" feeling of having a film premiere at the festival.
"It's like summer camp for Hollywood nerds," Cassidy Freeman said.

Thomas John Patrick Welling (born 1977) has officially returned to the spotlight as of January 31, 2026. Following the world premiere of his new film Chasing Summer at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this week, the actor has been the subject of intense social media discourse regarding his pivot from "Superhero" to "Indie Star." While critics have described the film as a bold departure from his Smallville roots, Welling’s performance is being praised for its quiet intensity. He is now scheduled to travel to Canada in two weeks for a highly anticipated Valentine's Day reunion with Kristin Kreuk at Fan Expo Vancouver.
