Raises aren’t just about time served or how busy the schedule feels. They’re about value created, not just hours worked. And value doesn’t only mean “I work hard.” Most people do. Value looks like: • helping patients say yes to care • keeping the schedule full and flowing • reducing remakes, cancellations, and chaos • supporting the team so the day runs smoother • protecting the reputation and culture of the practice When someone grows in skill, communication, efficiency, and ownership of their role…the practice grows too. That’s where sustainable raises come from. The hard truth? If a practice doesn’t grow, raises become emotional decisions instead of intentional ones. And that hurts everyone long-term. A raise isn’t a reward for surviving burnout. It’s not something you beg for when you’re exhausted. And it’s not supposed to feel awkward, emotional, or personal. As a young practice owner, I had to learn this from both sides. Wanting to pay people more and realizing I needed systems to measure and support growth first. Fair compensation works best when: ✔ expectations are clear ✔ growth paths are defined ✔ value is visible and measurable ✔ conversations happen before resentment builds Pay raises shouldn’t feel like a battle.
