🚨Teaching -ir, -ur, and -er🚨 These three sounds are some of the hardest to teach! The Sound Mounds can help students see where we typically hear each of these sounds within words or syllables. You can also use these tips as generalizations when teaching these sounds - remember, there is not a one size fits all rule for this phonics pattern! Feature Engineering: Log Transform, Binning & Encoding — Made Easy! 🚀 If you want your Machine Learning model to perform better, you need more than just good data — you need smart features! 💡 That’s where Feature Engineering comes in — it’s the process of transforming raw data into meaningful inputs that your model can actually learn from. Here’s how three simple techniques can make a huge difference 👇 📈 1️⃣ Log Transformation: Used when data is highly skewed. It compresses large values and makes the distribution more normal, improving model stability and reducing bias. 🔢 2️⃣ Binning (Discretization): Converts continuous variables into categories or ranges. Helps handle non-linear relationships and makes trends easier to spot. 🔤 3️⃣ Encoding: Transforms categorical data into numerical form so algorithms can process it. Common methods include: One-Hot Encoding 🔥 Label Encoding 🏷️ Target Encoding 🎯 💡 In short: Feature engineering = Turning messy data into model-ready magic ✨ 💾 Save this post to level up your data preprocessing skills! 💬 Comment “Smart features = Smart models!” if you agree 💪 #FeatureEngineering #DataScience #MachineLearning #LogTransform #Binning #Encoding
Phonics 101: Decoding vs. Encoding 🥳 Hit SAVE! Decoding: Applying phoneme/grapheme relationships to read words. Requires blending! Encoding: Applying phoneme/grapheme relationships to spell words. Requires segmenting! If you want to learn more about phonics and structured literacy, follow @farmerlovesphonics for more tips! I recently updated this resource to include more word building templates and word chain lists! Comment if you need the link. I’m just putting tools in their toolbox so they have everything they need to become a successful reader. When it CLICKS that- sentences are made of words and words are made up of letter sounds and HEY I know my letter sounds- there’s no stopping them! I love to watch for that click in every student throughout the year. #phonemicawareness #phonics #phonemes #lettersounds #segmenting #segmentingsounds #kindergarten #kindergartenteacher #teacher #teachers #kindergartenteachers #encoding
Is JSON burning LLM money? 💸 Meet TOON (Token-Oriented Object Notation) — a model-first encoding designed to reduce token count, latency, and inference cost for LLMs and Generative AI systems. JSON is great for APIs and backend services, but for LLMs, it introduces token overhead, redundant keys, and parsing noise. TOON optimizes data representation by making it compact, predictable, and tokenizer-friendly, improving performance in AI agents, prompt pipelines, and tool calls. 📌 JSON is not dead. 📌 TOON complements JSON at the LLM boundary. 📌 Same data, smarter encoding. If you work in frontend, backend, system design, or AI engineering, this shift matters. #Programming #SystemDesign #SoftwareEngineering #FrontendDevelopment #BackendDevelopment #Coding #ProgrammingLogic #JSON #LLMs #GenerativeAI #AIEngineering #Tokenization #Encoding #Decoding #agenticai
✏️ Correcting spelling errors? Make it intentional, supportive, and student-centered. When students misspell words like snake → snak, the goal isn’t just to fix the word, it’s to strengthen their spelling skills. 🧠✨ Here’s a simple 3-step routine for encoding errors you can use right away: ✔️ Prompt first: Have students read what they wrote and self-check the sounds ✔️ Highlight the pattern: Draw attention to the sound–spelling connection (hello, silent e 👀) ✔️ Model and Apply: Use sound boxes, then hand it right back to the student 💡 Starting with the lightest prompt and adding support only when needed helps students build independence and helps corrective feedback stick. 🔗 Want more practical, classroom-ready routines like this? How do students know when to use -dge or -ge to spell a word that ends with the sound /j/? English spelling follows predictable patterns. Short vowel before the /j/ sound? → -dge Long vowel before the /j/ sound? → -ge When students understand the pattern, spelling stops being guesswork and starts to sound logical! Save this for the next time a student (or teacher!) asks why judge has a “d” but the word huge doesn’t. #Spelling #Encoding #scienceofreading #structuredliteracy #explicitinstruction

Building words is an important part of our literacy block, but changing up the routine with a little joy can certainly amp up the engagement! In this reel, I spelled the words. However, if I was using this with kids, I would take the extra step to spell the sounds and blend them together to read the word! Drop a 🟩 if you want to try this or 🟪 if you’ve used this before! The Scaffolded Writing process (developed by Tools of the Mind) encourages students to plan their writing before putting it on paper. They then draw a line to stand for every word in their message and go back to represent the sounds they hear within each other word. Depending on a scholar’s developmental level, they may only represent each word with initial sounds, initial and ending sounds, or begin to add medial sounds. As students develop more advanced phonics skills, they will begin to use spelling or word patterns in their writing. In this video, I am modeling the process for my students before they engage in an independent writing task. Note: In our classroom, we call irregularly spelled words “Heart Words”. This method has helped my students learn to read and spell High-Frequency and Sight Words, teaching them to sound out the words that are phonetic… and the parts that aren’t are tricky parts we learn by heart! Comment if you would like more information on Heart Words or Scaffolded Writing! A HUGE shoutout to my girl @liz_penningt0n who not only created this writing checklist, but also introduced me to Scaffolded Writing! And another shoutout to @berol_dewdney who has also taught me so much about the power of embedding self-regulation/executive functioning skills in the writing process! @toolsofthemind #toolsofthemind #scaffoldedwriting #writingprocess #kindergarten #heartwords #encoding
