Cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse) is a collaborative drawing approach first used by surrealist artists to create bizarre and intuitive drawings. It is so much fun to create, and here is the step by step process:
1. Take a piece of paper and fold it into 3 equal parts.
2. Make small tick marks between sections to indicate where neck meets shoulders and where torso meets hips.
3. Draw or collage on the top section of paper.
4. Fold image back to conceal it.
5. Pass the paper to a friend to continue the drawing.
6. Pass to one more person to complete the drawing.
7. Unfold and reveal your exquisite corpse!
If my students feel anything like me when they come back tomorrow, they will feel like a zombie wearing a cement hat.
I love playing this drawing game to recharge and get students moving on a day back from a long break. If you don’t like the name Exquisite Corpse, I’ve been known to call it The Collaborative Drawing Game.
All you need is paper cut into long rectangles and whatever you have to draw with. I like to make up rules for when students trade drawings with each other. Instead of folding you can draw three lines. It’s less visually appealing, but harder to “‘mess up.”
This is also a super fun adult game if you have friends or family that like to draw and get weird.
Have y’all played Exquisite Corpse before? It’s one of our favorite art games. Take a peak at the silly drawings our members created during our Happy Hour at @fcbrewing last Friday 😍

The last days of the school year are tricky! If you need an engaging activity for all grade levels, try the Exquisite Corpse. Head to the #AOEUmagazine for a more in-depth look at the process and find even more games inspired by surrealist artists! #linkinbio
Here are the steps:
1️⃣Fold the paper into thirds.
2️⃣On the top, draw an imaginative head of a creature.
3️⃣Extend the neck lines into the middle section.
4️⃣Pass to a partner with the head hidden!
5️⃣Receive a new paper - don’t peek! Keep the surprise for the end.
6️⃣Draw the torso in the middle section
7️⃣Extend the hips into the bottom section.
8️⃣Pass to a partner with the first two sections hidden!
9️⃣Receive a new paper - don’t peek! Keep the surprise for the end.
🔟Finish by drawing the mode of transportation.
1️⃣1️⃣Pass to a partner and receive the final paper - take a look!
1️⃣2️⃣Revise the image to make it complete.

Having a Whale of a Time (and other monstrous things)
Here is another little flip book of monstrous things. I made it yesterday, along with participants in the free Creativity Jumpstart sessions that I lead twice weekly for Georgetown Hospital’s Arts & Humanities Program. (I’m showing the one I made on Monday again, too, because I realized that I hadn’t quite finished it!)
I was inspired in part by those “exquisite corpse” books that we made as kids, and in part by the talented @julie.liger.belair and her magical “Scrappy Blah Blahs”.
I’m also sharing this for the open call by @loobyroux_collage_club “You’ve created a Monster!”
From their IG: Create a collage with body parts, machinery, fruit, veg, animals, words, landscapes...anything! It must depict a ‘human’ like form as if you have constructed a new living being.
Inspired by Frankenstein’s Monster. Approach this as openly as you like. Make it for fun! Make it about yourself! Make it about something you despise! Just make something! (Make something new!)
Deadline October 25th.
This will tie in with the spookiest time of the year!

Your favorite exquisite corpse?
I love to use surrealist techniques in my classroom to foster creativity and build classroom community. Cubomania is when you cut up a picture into cubes and then rearrange the pieces. This is a great sketchbook activity to show students how to see color and texture in a new way. Sometimes I also have students use these collages as the reference image for a colored pencil study. Exquisite corpse is a fun drawing game that three or four students can play together and it’s a great community builder. I extend the activity by asking the students to come up with some character traits for their collaborative creature such as the characters name, what they like to eat, what they like to do, and their life’s goal. Frottage is a texture, robbing technique, and a great way to get students up on their feet and looking at every other day objects in new ways, it’s a great way to help students see the objects around them differently as aren’t making tools. #arttutorial #artteachersofinstagram #artteacher #artteacherlife #artteachersofinstagram #artteachersofig #arteducation #arteducator #arted #highschoolartteacher #highschoolartteachers #highschoolartlesson #highschoolartwork #highschoolartist #artclass #artclassroom #middleschoolartteacher #middleschoolart #arttechniques #artlesson #artlessons #iteachart #surrealisttechniques #surrealist #frottage #cubomania #exquisitecorpse #classroomcommunity #classroomculture
To be honest, I was having a really hard time coming up with ideas for art club. So I decided that as I come up with ideas, and as I put them into action during art club, I will share them on here, so that other people struggling to come up with ideas can hopefully find help. This activity is called exquisite corpse, and though it is a weird name, it’s a very very fun activity.

Remember Exquisite Corpse? The collaborative drawing game. We are taking inspiration from Exquisite Corpse for this reuse game, many people passing and adding to a project using materials we already have. 🧟♻️
I glued a broken embroidery hoop and a basket weave together and passed the project to @pencilpopsam to add more.
Comment with what you would add next. And KC makers, raise your hand if you want the project passed to you! 🤚🏼
Check back to see more videos of each pass off.
Rules of Pass the Project Game
1. You can only use things you already have
2. You can add but not take away
3. Change the object in some way but know that others will be adding after you.
4. Document your process however you want
5. Take a short video passing off the object to the next maker
6. Make a reel showing the process and the pass off (again, however you want to edit it). Add @magpiecreativereuse and the next maker you pass to as collaborators on the reel. (If it’s a private account, must be following you).
7. Tag all previous makers and the next maker. Post!
