Faith Ringgold’s, “Wedding on the Seine,” (1991), revolves around the fictional story of aspiring black female artist Willia Marie Simone, who becomes successful in France during the 1920s and a peer of many prominent artists and historical figures of her time. “Wedding on the Seine” describes a scene from the marriage of Willia Marie to a Frenchman named Pierre. Realizing that this new beginning may bring about an end to her creative development, Willia Marie abruptly throws her wedding bouquet into the Seine River as she flees the ceremony and runs towards her independence. Listen to the full story as read by @cocoelysses_percussion, and see “Faith Ringgold: American People” before it closes in five days on February 25. #faithringgold

A joy and honour to share our artistic collaboration with the prolific artist Faith Ringgold for the #DiorCouture Autumn-Winter 2024-2025 show at the Musée Rodin in Paris. For more than half a century, Faith Ringgold explored themes of race, gender, class, family, and community through a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, mask and doll-making, textiles, and performance art. A major figure in American feminist art, she advocated for bringing the works of young Black American artists into major American museum collections. Widely celebrated as an artist and intersectional activist, she is perhaps best known for her narrative ‘story’ quilts. Commissioned by @mariagraziachiuri, Creative Director of @dior Women’s Lines, Faith Ringgold’s evocative narratives were realized by the skilled artisans of @chanakya.school and the @chanakya.in ateliers under the artistic guidance of Creative Director, Karishma Swali (@karishmaswali_77). The installation showcases needlepoint techniques like appliqué and patchwork, along with beadwork using custom glass mosaics crafted from repurposed glass and acrylic. Our sincere gratitude to @mariagraziachiuri and @dior for giving us the opportunity to honour Faith Ringgold’s remarkable work, which seamlessly blends art with activism. #Chanakya #ChanakyaSchoolofCraft #CraftingTomorrow #FaithRinggold #dior #karishmaSwali #MariaGraziaChiuri #DiorCoutureAutumnWinter2025

We’re deeply saddened that legendary American artist, Faith Ringgold, has died.   Ringgold has been a pioneering figure in American art for over six decades. Born in Harlem in 1930, Ringgold developed a wide-ranging practice that includes painting, sculpture, quilt-making, writing and performance. Her poetic and politically-engaged work is part of museum collections across the United States, and we were privileged to include her artwork in Tate Modern’s exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power in 2017.   This film by Cecile Emeke celebrates the life of Faith Ringgold and the influence of her childhood in Harlem on her work. 🎥
🌟 🌟 Honoring the Legacy of Faith Ringgold 🌟   As we mourn the passing of Faith Ringgold, an extraordinary artist, educator, author, and activist, we remember her immeasurable impact.    Ringgold was a visionary who seamlessly wove together personal narratives, collective histories, and social justice advocacy in her work. Her career bridged the vibrant energy of the Harlem Renaissance with the urgent political art of contemporary Black artists working today, many of whom cite her as inspiration. From creating some of the most indelible artworks of the civil rights era to challenging accepted hierarchies of art versus craft with her groundbreaking story quilts, Ringgold produced a body of work that continues to bear witness to the complexity of the American experience. Through the years, it has been our honor to support and celebrate Ringgold's trailblazing art, most recently in her 2022 retrospective, "Faith Ringgold: American People," which traveled to the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Picasso Museum in Paris, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.   Faith Ringgold’s creativity, courage, and commitment to justice changed the art world and will forever inspire us.
