Hello! Margaret here, I'm the Head of Design at Farmlink! I want to give a huge shout-out to Keith, Javier, and everyone in the farming community. I don't speak Spanish, so while on the lemon farm, I mostly observed and listened. The following is the biggest takeaway I have from this trip: -Farm labor is highly skilled. To say the least, it requires incredible speed, precise technique, along with great mental & physical endurance. -Farm work is hard work. In this scenario, many farmers were there from 6am to 5pm. From going up and down steep hills, risking getting bit by rattle snakes hiding under trees, to constant dust in your face at the sorting station, and withstanding long hours of heat while having to keep all skin covered, farm work takes a toll on your body and has lasting health implications. Farmworkers are the backbone of our food system and they deserve immense amounts of respect. I was lucky enough to spend the day with many incredible people watching, learning, and trying to keep up. We picked and packaged 72,000lbs of lemons in just one day (the whole operation took 4 days). I'm excited to be able to show you this inside look at how much work it took for lemons to get from trees to plates. Next time you're squeezing a lemon, remember the people and faces behind it. 💛

For the veggie lovers — Let’s taco ‘bout this @farmlinkhawaii fueled taco 🌮 for Cinco de Mayo. • Organic Rainbow Carrots from @maoorganicfarms • Huge golden beets from @evonuk.farms on Maui • Juicy tomatoes from @hofarmshawaii Simply roasted with olive oil, 350° till they were nice and brown and soft. Our Blue Corn Conico Azul @raiztortillas laid a sweet, elote foundation, and then these veggies did the rest! ✨ Chef topped it off with some Raíz salsa and Habañero Pickled Onions — and we couldn’t believe the explosion of flavor. 🎇 So easy. So fresh. So good. So get your @farmlinkhawaii haul now (@raiztortillas included!) & support our amazing local farms while indulging in this week’s festivities. What no one tells you about food waste … 🍎 Approximately 1/3 of all food produced globally goes to waste 🥉 The USA is 3rd in the world for wasting consumable food. 🗑️ About 30 percent of food in American grocery stores is thrown away. Thankfully, the @farmlinkproject was founded to help solve the issue of wasting food. Their goal is to bring as much of this untouched food to as many people as they can by setting up freight lines between farmers with surpluses and food banks/ or communities in need.
