Education. Not advice. Consult your financial adviser
My name is Jim Chuong. I made millions without the hustle. I’m a Canadian that invests in U.S. stocks and U.S. real estate.
I am not a financial adviser. I do not give financial advice. Consult your financial adviser.
I am not a lawyer. I do not give legal advice. Consult your lawyer.
I am not an accountant. I do not give tax advice. Consult a licensed tax professional.
Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.

I just sold my Vanguard S&P 500 and switched to @invescouk version when I was rebalancing my portfolio. Here’s why. (Not financial advice, just my personal views and education. Capital at risk. Info correct at the time of writing)
Most people assume all S&P 500 trackers are basically the same. They’re not.
Here’s the breakdown:
1. Lower fees
Vanguard S&P 500: 0.07%
Invesco S&P 500: 0.05%
Small difference, but it adds up over decades.
2. Better performance (1-year)
Invesco S&P 500: 19.47%
Vanguard S&P 500: 19.38%
Same index. Different returns. Why?
3. It’s about fund structure, not stock picking
→ Vanguard’s fund buys the physical underlying shares. Because these are US shares, you get hit with a 15% withholding tax on dividends.
→ Invesco’s fund is synthetic — it holds a swap contract with a bank that mimics the S&P 500’s performance. No physical shares, no dividend tax.
4. Why this matters more than it sounds
Most of the S&P 500’s total return comes from dividends being reinvested, not just price growth. That 15% tax drag translates to roughly 0.2–0.3% lost per year.
5. the tradeoff
Synthetic replication isn’t free of risk. The swap contract itself carries a cost (0.072%, on top of the TER), and there’s counterparty risk — you’re relying on the bank(s) behind the swap to honour the contract.
Invesco mitigates this by spreading exposure across multiple counterparties and monitoring them daily and over collateralised, but it’s not zero risk. Nothing in investing is.
This is the trade you’re making: slightly lower dividend drag, in exchange for taking on swap counterparty exposure instead of physical share ownership.
Over a 30-year compounding period, that “tiny” percentage becomes a genuinely huge difference in your end pot.
I’ve spent 8+ years on the trading floor, and this is exactly the kind of detail that never makes it into a fund fact sheet — it’s stuff you only pick up from being inside the industry.
I’m here to ungatekeep it. Share it with a friend who might not know and just started investing too.

I'm a 40 year old working mum, a dentist and if I could give my younger self one piece of financial advice, it would be this:
