The City of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue’s recruit class faced their first uniform inspection, a critical step in their journey through the fire academy.
Every detail matters. From the alignment of their gear to the condition of their uniform, recruits are held to a standard that reflects the discipline required in the fire service.
Inspections take place twice a week, reinforcing discipline and accountability. Recruits are also tested on fire service history and the material they are currently learning.
These inspections are more than appearance. They instill discipline, sharpen attention to detail, and build habits that carry over to the fireground, where precision can make the difference.
This is where discipline begins. #miami #fire #recruit #fireacademy
What an exciting first day for the Fire portion of the Teen Police and Fire Academy! #firefighters #firefighter #teenfire #teenfirefighter
Showing up prepared is one less reason for an instructor to remember your name. 😂
A few things I kept in my bag every day during the Fire Academy:
✅ Black shoe polish + an old cotton T-shirt
✅ Lighter for loose uniform threads
✅ Permanent marker
✅ Emergency candy
✅ Chocolate-covered espresso beans for long classroom blocks
Recruits: save this before Day 1 and send it to someone headed to the Academy.
Academy grads—what did you keep in your bag that I missed? Drop it below. 👇

Fire academy is about more than learning how to fight fires. It’s about building the skills, confidence, and teamwork needed to make life-saving decisions under pressure. Every drill, every lesson, and every challenge prepares these recruits for the moment someone needs their help most. @planofirerescue team is sharing some lessons they learned at fire academy. Tune in to #HeartsofHeroes to see Plano Fire in action!
I’ll be honest- in fire academy I couldn’t throw ladders. It was a skill I really struggled with and I was very embarrassed about it. Since I graduated academy I have worked on this skill until I was able to not only throw the 14 foot but also the 24 extension ladder. If you suck at a skill keep practicing until you can do it!! It’s our job to be good at our jobs. #firefighter #firefighting #firefightertraining #training #progress

Gotta test out the bike, right? 🚲
It’s hard to tell if the kids or the officers are having more fun on our annual Heroes & Helpers shopping day. But, what we do know is that we’re fortunate to spend the day with these deserving young good citizens.
Thank you @target on Trueman Boulevard and our Hilliard Citizen’s Police/Fire Academy elves for the help making this magical day come together once again. Our hearts are full.
In Week 5 of our fire academy, recruits were introduced to ground ladders. These tools range from 10 to 35 feet and weigh up to 122 pounds, making them essential for rescues, ventilation, and reaching those tough spots during an emergency. 🔥
Congratulations to our three newest Public Safety Officers on successfully completing firefighter orientation training! 🚒🚓
Following graduation from the fire academy, each recruit spent two full weeks working alongside our fire crews learning Rohnert Park-specific policies, standard operating procedures, tools, equipment, and firefighting techniques that build upon the foundation developed during the academy.
With this final step complete, they are now fully dual-trained Public Safety Officers, prepared to serve our community in both law enforcement and fire service roles.
Please join us in congratulating them on reaching this major milestone in their training journey and welcoming them to the field!
On Friday morning, FDNY Probationary Firefighters participated in a Spirit Run. It’s a long-standing tradition that signifies the end of the Fire Academy. The class runs from Randall’s Island to the FDR Drive carrying 343 flags honoring the members of the Department who died on September 11th.
