Itās been a decade since I last painted an under water scene, and Iāve learned a lot since then.
- darker water needs to be a red bias blue (eg Pthalo blue + French ultramarine and red for real depth)
- lighter water needs to be a green bias blue (eg Pthalo green, cobalt teal etc)
- blend in downward diagonal strokes rather than horizontally, this represents natural rays of light
- prepare your base layers with higher chroma colours and then add more muted/murky colours in later layers. This creates visual depth in the light rather than a flat pastel colour.
- use the first layer for structure if including waves, then create the undulating shapes as you progress.
- work from dark to light and in layers
Surface waves are a little different but Iād still approach them with roughly the same idea.

Let me tell you my story.
I first downloaded Photoshop in 2015, the year I created and posted here on instagram my very first surreal photo composite. Since then I spent countless hours learning and improving, and I worked hard to build a considerable body of work and portfolio. 2018 was the year I realized it was possible to become a full-time artist, a dream come true.
Iāve ābeen hereā for a long time, before photo composites became trendy, before influencers and content creators were a thing.
Some people have been following me for more than 9 years (crazy, I know!!!) š¤Æ
Iāve seen this app change drastically, I adapted to new things, new technologies, new strategiesā¦ and I also had some awful phases in between all this (I wonāt even talk about 2020). My journey has been nothing less than a roller coaster.
When the first AI Art generators became popular I wasnāt worried at all about it having an impact on my art, career, income, and motivationā¦ but here we are. Things have changed so much and now AI art is so realistic and mind-blowing that is scary. I donāt want to spend 10, 20, or more hours doing something that can be mistaken as AI art.
I honestly lost all my motivation to create my āold artā.Ā
Thatās the main reason why lately Iāve been exploring new mediums, focusing on illustration, traditional art, ceramicsā¦ and basically everything except photo composites. I donāt want to have to justify that my art is not AI.
Iām still proud of myself and the artwork I created. I wonāt stop sharing my āold artā, but I want to take my future art in a different directionĀ š«Ā
