Repost @hsplshigov: The recent art dedication ceremony at Nānākuli Public Library brought together community members, local leaders, and students in a heartfelt celebration of art, culture, and resilience.
The ceremony started with the blowing of the pū and two oli, “Ua Ao Hawaiʻi” and “Oli Aloha No Nānākuli,” performed by the haumāna of Ka Waihona o ka Naʻauao. Stacey Aldrich, State Librarian of the Hawai’i State Public Library System, welcomed the guests. Attendees heard remarks from Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke, State Senator Cross Makani Crabbe, Nānākuli-Maili Neighborhood Board Chair Samantha DeCorte, Executive Director of the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Karen Ewald, artist Scott Norwood Fitzel, and Nānākuli Public Library Branch Manager Kelsey Domingo.
The sculpture Mānaiakalani, designed and created by Scott Norwood Fitzel, represents Maui’s fishhook and the constellation Mānaikalani. It is featured in the library as part of the Art in Public Places Program of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
Following the untying of the maile lei, guests enjoyed refreshments while being entertained by Ka Waihona o ka Naʻauao haumāna who performed a hula about Mānaiakalani, composed by Kumu Hula Leonani Nāhoʻoikaika-Medeiros. Hawaiian musician Thurston Kamealoha also serenaded the audience with traditional Hawaiian music and local favorites.

• Computers with Internet access. View live and on-demand video of hearings and floor sessions.
• WiFi access, available inside and outside of all of our branches
• Assistance in connecting to a hearing

Meet Dr. James Chou, a 105-year-old retired mechanical engineer and former Professor of Engineering at UH Mānoa. A devoted patron of the Salt Lake–Moanalua Public Library, he was among the dedicated community members who helped advocate for its construction in the early 1990s.
Born in China, Dr. Chou came to the U.S. during WWII with the Chinese Air Force, where he met his wife. He later worked on a sugar plantation in Maui before moving to Oʻahu in the 1950s, dedicating his life to education, engineering, and community service.
Thanks to his steadfast commitment, the community has a place to read, learn, and connect.
