Last week Arthur and I spent the day on Holy Island, one of my favourite places to go if we are staying up in Northumberland and the tide times work.
Here’s a mini guide to the basics of the island, things to do and info worth knowing:
🚨 Check the daily tide times on Northumberland Council website before crossing the Causeway - don’t take risks!
Cafes, pubs and business hours coincide with this too
🅿️ Parking is at Holy island car park TD15 2SE, Pay by Phone app code 804140

Imagine getting stranded on an island... just because you missed the tide.
Welcome to Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island.
This tiny island off the Northumberland coast is one of England’s most unique day trips.
But there’s one very important rule: check the tide times, because the road disappears under the sea twice a day!
Lindisfarne has been a place of pilgrimage for over 1,300 years, with a beautiful medieval priory, a picture-perfect harbour and a castle perched dramatically on a rocky hill overlooking the coastline.
Take your time wandering the peaceful streets, pop into the local cafés and don’t leave without visiting the famous Castle, a 16th century fortification with an arts and crafts interior. The views from the top are absolutely worth the climb.
Just make sure you leave before the tide comes back in... Unless, of course, you’ve packed for an unexpected overnight stay!

🌊 THE BRITISH VILLAGE THE SEA CUTS OFF TWICE A DAY…
Holy Island, Northumberland. When the tide comes in, the causeway disappears beneath the sea. 😳
Could you live somewhere that gets cut off from the mainland every day? 👇
#HolyIsland #Lindisfarne #BritishHistory #HiddenBritain #UKTravel
If tranquillity had a location, it’d be here. 😍
Holy Island, just off Northumberland’s coast, turns into its own world when the tide rolls in, cutting it off completely. When it reappears, you’ll find cosy cafés, an ancient priory, and a castle perched right on the edge. 🌊🏰
💡Fun fact: It even starred on the big screen in the film 28 Years Later. It's not just beautiful, it's cinematic. 🎬

You’re doing it all wrong tbh…🤭
📌 Make sure you SAVE this for your own trip and send it to who you’d explore with.
Three years ago, we genuinely believed that the UK was pretty boring…the same places we’d grown up around and had barely any appreciation for.
Then we started to actually explore the UK and what we’ve found over these last years has shocked us. This country is full to the brim with turquoise beaches, dramatic mountains, hidden waterfalls, rugged coastlines and adorable towns/villages.
And that’s honestly what we love the most about travelling around Britain, being totally surprised by our own country and finding ourselves saying “I can’t believe this is the UK…”
Here’s just some of our favourite places👇🏼
🇬🇧 Holkham Beach, Norfolk
🇬🇧 Pembrokeshire Coast, Wales
🇬🇧 Lincoln Cathedral, Lincolnshire
🇬🇧 Grasmere, Lake District
🇬🇧 Jurassic Coast, Dorset
🇬🇧 Holy Island, Northumberland
🇬🇧 Steall Waterfall, Scotland
🇬🇧 Hartland Peninsula, Devon
🇬🇧 Chrome Hill, Peak District
🇬🇧 River Stour, Suffolk
🇬🇧 St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall
🇬🇧 Eryri National Park, Wales
Our biggest tip for enjoying the UK is to get out of London and other major cities. There’s so much to see beyond it and whole other side to the UK.

📍Watergate Forest Park, somewhat of a hidden gem, this gorgeous park has it all from lakes and tree-covered walks to a mini waterfall
📍Tynemouth Longsands, start at any point along the sea front and enjoy the salt air and sand under your feet & don’t miss fish and chips after

Lindisfarne, aka Holy Island, Northumberland, North East England: The island was once the domain of monks, ravaged first by the vikings and then by Henry VIII.
As it’s cutoff twice daily from the mainland, I did wonder what would happen if there was a fire and the causeway was impassable…

Northumberland Coastal path day 5: 11 miles from Belford to Holy Island causeway with my 15 month old on my back! The end is in sight! 🙌🏼🥾
A place that truly feels like the edge of the world 🌊✨
South Stack Lighthouse has to be one of the most dramatic coastal spots we’ve visited. Perched on the cliffs of Holy Island, surrounded by wild seas and incredible views, it’s the kind of place that makes you stop and appreciate how beautiful the coastline really is.
Definitely one for your North Wales bucket list 🐾
