A pretty little Pygmy Rattlesnake that @nkfherping spotted in late December. We spent several hours hiking prime sandhill habitat and only found a handful of snakes, so the trip wasn’t super productive. But seeing a rattlesnake in habitat is always cool. The Pygmy Rattlesnake is the smallest rattlesnake species in the US. They have cytotoxic venom that they use to hunt tiny animals like lizards, frogs, rodents and even invertebrates.

Finding Toad-headed pitviper at night in southern Colombia! Bothrocophias hyoprora. The Amazonian Toad-headed pitviper. In this general area they seemed to be the most common viper around which was a bit surprising. But these snakes tend to be more terrestrial spending the majority of their time on the leaf litter but will sometimes climb up vegetation. Found along Colombia down into Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.
