"This Japanese chef is Amazing" from @foodyAmaze
Decided to cut some sushi and sashimi out of clay, cos I was so inspired by the Japanese chef I met yesterday. And what more therapeutic way to start the day, alone in the studio where I can get all willful and play! Test tiles in the making. To try out more than a dozen different combinations and effects of glazes. But then again, they look like miniature versions of something else I had in mind. Oh the time and effort needed to make a piece… why am I like this… #potterywithastory #dannytheclayplayer
Our Japanese Chef, Takashi Murayama, brings the timeless tradition of bento to life with his signature Iro-iro Bento (いろいろ弁当). Originally, bento served as a practical means for samurai and travelers to carry nourishing meals on the go. This tradition is reimagined by Chef Takashi, who infuses his own unique touch, turning each bento into a work of art. Savor the artistry of Chef Takashi’s signature bento, masterfully crafted with the finest ingredients, only at @imarisurabaya #ImariatJW #JWMarriottSurabaya #jwmarriottsurabayahotel
Japan is quietly refusing foreign customers at the doors of half-empty restaurants across Tokyo — and a Japanese chef just explained the unwritten rule behind it. It’s not what most people think. Not language. Not culture. Money. According to one insider, small restaurants run on tight margins. And every seat matters. • Expected spend: around ¥5,000 per person • Tourists often spend closer to ¥1,500 • Stay longer, order less That gap adds up. Meanwhile, local customers often spend far more. Quick turnover. Higher bills. So the decision becomes simple. Who keeps the lights on tonight? There’s no sign on the door. No rule written anywhere. Just a quiet “X.” A polite refusal. And you’re outside. No explanation. So here’s the real question: Is this survival for small businesses… or a line that shouldn’t be crossed?
Why don’t they serve ketchup with french fries in Japan? 🍟 Day 5 in Japan turned into one of the most memorable food experiences of the trip. I flew over 3,000 miles to make pasta and eat French fries with a Japanese chef. Through a random Instagram comment, I connected with @naoyuki.arai of @cadota_tokyo , who invited us to spend the day with him in Tokyo. He picked us up, introduced us to incredible kakigori, then brought us back to his restaurant where we made pasta together. After training in Bari, Italy, he fell in love with orecchiette and built a menu that blends Italian tradition with Japanese seasonality. Every day, he cooks with vegetables that didn’t sell at that morning’s farmers market, turning what could be waste into something beautiful. The food was soulful, thoughtful, and deeply personal. A reminder that some of the best travel experiences start with a simple comment and a shared love of food.
