It seems that it’s time to take my own advice and start sticking to my spray downs and routines!
Spraying my hair down with my “loc tonic” mixture or just pure rose water mixed with distilled water was a game changer during my first loc journey. 🌱
That + washing on a bi-weekly basis, deep conditioning every other wash and monthly retwists NEEDS to become a priority for me, even while I’m in the throes of taking care of a toddler + a newborn!

5 years loc’d today. 🥹💚
It’s actually emotional looking back at where I started because when I put those two-strand twists in 5 years ago, I had no idea what this journey would become. I didn’t know how much patience my locs would teach me. How much I would have to learn, unlearn, experiment, and figure out for myself.
And I definitely didn’t know how many opinions people would have about MY hair. 😂😬
Over the years I’ve heard it all. What I should use. What I shouldn’t use. How often I should retwist. How my locs should look. That they’re too frizzy. That certain styles won’t work. That locs aren’t versatile.
Meanwhile, my locs just kept growing. And so did I.
I learned to stop chasing what somebody else thought my locs were supposed to look like and started paying attention to what MY hair needed.
Some stages I loved. Some I didn’t. Some styles were a YES and others… absolutely not for me. But every single stage has been mine.
And now I get to look back at those starter locs and see how far we’ve come.
They’ve been with me through so many versions of myself over these 5 years. So many life changes, lessons, wins, losses and moments.
They’re not perfect. They get frizzy. My roots grow out. I experiment. I do things differently. But I genuinely love my locs and this journey.
And if there’s anything these 5 years have taught me, it’s to enjoy YOUR journey. Learn your own hair. Give it time. And don’t let somebody else’s ‘rules’ stop you from loving it along the way.

I only have 47 locs & when I started them almost 11 years ago I was so worried my locs were gonna be boney & not full enough. As the years went by my locs have thickened up & gives a more full look.
Moral of the story, if you have under 50 locs & worried about fullness, be patient 😉🫶🏾
