medical writing: could it actually be a real career (or side income) for you? I was wondering this 10 years ago 🙋‍♀️ I tried it, landed my first gig outside of my clinic hours for $1200, and got my answer… and now I work around my kids and health, not at the cost of them. What you must know: medical content writing isn’t a separate skill you need to learn from scratch. You’ve been doing it your whole career. Every time you explained a diagnosis in plain English. Every patient letter. Every time you translated a clinical guideline or new research into something a real person could act on. That’s the job. The difference is getting paid well for it, remotely, flexibly, on your own terms (mostly, you still have deadlines and such). I’m a podiatrist who’s been writing medical content full-time for 10 years. Here’s what actually helped me make the switch: 1. I stopped waiting until I felt “qualified enough” 👉 your degree, your years on the floor, your patient-facing experience… that’s your portfolio before you’ve written a single piece of content 2. I started with the niches I already knew If you’re a physio, write about musculoskeletal health. If you’re a GP, health tech content or patient education materials are an obvious fit. You already know what’s accurate, what patients actually ask, and what the clinical reality looks like and that’s worth a LOT to a brand or agency 3. I gave myself the freedom to try 👉 naturally we are high achievers. But this doesn’t need to be all or nothing. Literally just try. Take on one article, for example. Charge $500 for it. See if you actually LIKE doing it. Understand how long it takes you 4. I got clear on who actually hires medical writers 👉 health companies, private clinics, medical education companies + SO MANY OTHERS all need people who understand medicine and can write clearly. Most are actively looking.
