No but really, they really missed out by not having a window out back 🧻

If you’re visiting the Milford Sound, you NEED to add this to your itinerary…
📍 Milford Track, Milford Sound, New Zealand
This Milford Track is a 33.2 mile multi-day through hike, but you can hike do a section of it as a day hike. In order to get to the trailhead, you need to book a very short, but scenic boat ride. You get dropped off at Sandfly and you’ll want to move out of there quickly because as the name hints at, the sand flies are BAD!!!! We actually doubted everything as soon as we got off the boat haha (but just keep walking, it gets better!)
One thing that’s nice about this excursion is you can really hike as far as you want then just turn around and take the next boat back. We chose to hike to Giant Gate Falls which was about 7 miles round trip. Most of the hike is in a lush forest before opening up just before the water fall. Highly recomend adding this to your Milford Sound Itinerary!
While we had the most glorious sunny day, it’s usually raining here. So bring waterproof shoes and rain gear! 🌧️

The Milford Track, through New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park, it dubbed the most wonderful walk in the world and let me tell ya, it lives up to that. It’s a hike where you actually want some rain to see waterfalls cascading down the valley and mountains on each side.
Although I could’ve done with a bit less than 60mm+ during our four days!
What an experience.
On Sunday 8th of March we joined a crew of 20 on a mission to run the Milford track led by @carly_webber @runnersnz
What ensued was a 16hour day, from a 5am bus ride, a 7pm boat home from the other end and a 3 hour drive home.
Such an amazing experience to also be able to support @meghanizeller on her first ultra attempt. I mean, what a place to do it?
We were gifted with torrential rain, raging waterfalls, expansive Milford views and sheer cliffs.
I think I get it now.
A massive thanks to @carly_webber and @runnersnz again, and @fiordlandoutdoors for the boat!. If you are keen for next year, send them a DM

The hardest part about the Milford Track is securing permits! This walking season permits sold out in 30 minutes! 4 days, 53.5 km of spectacular scenery! Although we walked 74km with the side trips. 🥾🍃✨️🏔

Long miles, long smiles. 🥾🌳
Laugh with us as we grow more unhinged and rain soaked over 4 days on the Milford Track. Still seriously grateful for the hiking spot on the trail and to have spent so much time looking at mosses, ferns, birds, mushrooms, and waterfalls this weekend - truly a biologists dream. 🍄🍄🟫
(The Milford Track itself is 33.2 mi / 53.5 km long, the extra distance comes from us taking every excursion and extra viewpoint available to us over the four days).

Last year we started a new family tradition, getting out on the @docgovtnz Great Walks together. To celebrate Mum’s 70th this year, it felt like the right moment to tick off the Milford Track. Getting through the booking process was a mission in itself, but worth every refresh. Plenty of conversations about layers were had. As it turned out, we couldn’t have asked for better autumn conditions — crisp, bluebird days and with Ultimate Hikes wrapped up for the season at the beginning of April, we walked it with half the usual number of people on the track. Highly recommend. Milford bookings open tomorrow, and if you manage to nab a spot, happy to answer DMs on logistics. 🏔️
It rains 182 days of the year here on the Milford Track to Milford Sound, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
When the rain comes, the entire landscape changes in a matter of minutes, sheer cliffs explode with hundreds of waterfalls, some fine as mist, others thundering into the valleys below. The sound of rushing water echoes all around, and the track becomes a living, moving world of torrents and spray, wild and unforgettable.
There are other notable New Zealand fiords well worth visiting, which also include incredible hikes. These are:
Doubtful Sound
Dusky Sound
Breaksea Sound
Preservation Inlet
Marlborough Sound

Moments forever etched into my mind.
The four days, three nights spent walking the Milford Track in Fiordland, New Zealand.
Often called the “World’s Finest Walk”, when we crossed the 1069 meter high point on the adventure, MacKinnon Pass, it was cloaked in cloud. As we began the long descent, the winds shifted and began to blow the cloud away, revealing the magnificent and jaw dropping beauty of the high mountain glaciers.
I’m so excited to sit down and work through the hundreds of photos and video clips I shot on this adventure, for now, this little iPhone clip will have to do.
Have you ever walked the Milford Track? Who would you walk it with? Tag them in the comments.
Missed out on tickets for the Milford Track? 🥾
The Milford Track is one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, and the near 7,000 tickets released each year can sell out in as quickly as 3 minutes!
If like us, you were disappointed that you were unable to make a booking, then this is the next best alternative!
Some of the boat cruise companies for Milford Sound also offer a Milford Track walk where you can walk the last 10km of the famous hike in reverse from Sandfly point.
Whilst it was still disappointing not being able to do the full hike, this really was still an incredible experience and allows you to explore so much more of the beautiful Fiordland National Park than just on the boat. 🌿
It’s something I would definitely recommend when visiting New Zealand. Have you visited the “8th Natural wonder of the world” before or is it on your travel bucket list?
