Quiet, real, and full of character.

Have you been to Melanie Jan LaPlant Dressel Park? It’s located along the Tacoma Waterfront near downtown Tacoma!
A Northwest-themed play area includes a curvy metal slide coming down from a 36-foot climbing tower reminiscent of a 200-foot smokestack that stood on the property in the early 1900s when it was a heating plant.
In a throwback to the industrial past of the site, there is also a log jam play area.
A 50-foot pedestrian bridge in the center of the park connects to the play tower. Under the bridge, a concrete walkway extends from Dock Street to a viewing platform of the shoreline where visitors can see downtown Tacoma, Mount Rainier and a marina.
An esplanade running the width of the park adds another segment to the walkway that will eventually connect the entire waterfront from the Museum of Glass on the south end to Thea’s Park on the north.
There are trees, picnicking and viewing areas, restrooms and a pavilion that can be rented for small parties.

What’s it like living in Tacoma? Ask 1000 different Tacomans and you’ll probably get 1000 different answers. And I talk to people about it all the time because… you know… my job.
Tacoma sometimes just feels like a Rorschach test. Some people look at this ink blot of a city and see nature, orcas, community, and possibility. Other people see poverty and decline. I stopped trying to change peoples minds a loooooong time ago. I get that not everybody experiences the city the same way. Depending on where you come from and where you’re going in life you’re going to experience where you live differently than other people.
I’ve lived in different neighborhoods around Pierce County and it’s pretty easy to for me to find good and bad in all of them if I look hard enough.
Disclaimer aside, I moved back to downtown Tacoma six months ago and I’m loving it. I feel so lucky to live in the mix of so many cool things to do and frankly, so many great walks and coffee shops. Nothing’s perfect but I’m going to give it 5 stars so far.

Yesterday someone asked me for my summer plans. Normally I love to travel in the summer and visit friends who live in exciting places. This summer I’m planning to be right here. With any luck I’ll be taking a few PNW road trips!
Summer in the Pacific Northwest (and Tacoma in particular) is unbeatable anywhere in the world. We have our hot days- but compared to most places they’re a joke and only really last a few weeks.
When you grow up here it’s easy to take our weather for granted. The more I travel the more I realize that weather wise we live in one of the most perfect places on earth. In spite of the gray and rain of this season- and probably because of it!

Rainy days in Washington just hit different 🌧️☔️ This is Owen’s Beach in Tacoma. It’s a popular spot for swimming (yes, in the cold) and kayaking.

If you got sent this, someone thinks you’re making a huge mistake. 😬
And honestly? They’re not wrong.
If you’re not already in Tacoma, you’re missing on what makes it so special - the outdoor beauty, the endless community events, the fact that you can stroll the waterfront on a Tuesday (and maybe spot an orca).
Tacoma has tons in store - comment TACOMA and I’ll send you my free Neighborhood Guide.
If we haven’t met, I’m @shannonbethshaffer Tacoma real estate agent sharing what makes our area one of the best places to call home in Washington.

I went from Downtown Tacoma to the Dome District to catch a train yesterday evening. The light was so dusky and beautiful.
I had a plan to go to Alfred’s before my train but they are closed Saturday nights- so I walked over to @newfrontier instead. They were about to have a show but kindly let me come in and have an emergency grilled cheese and tomato soup before I caught my train. When I left it was starting to fill up and it looked like it was going to be a great show.
