New to native plants and not sure where to start? 🌱 You don’t need to know every species or completely overhaul your yard. Start with a few reliable native plants that are easy to grow, beautiful, and bring real ecological value to your landscape. These 6 are some of my favorite picks for beginners. They’re approachable, dependable, and a great way to start building a yard that supports pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Which one would you plant first? 👇 #NativePlants #NativeGardening #MichiganNativePlants #PollinatorGarden #BeginnerGardening #GardenTips #NativePlantGarden
This summer I wanted to test how much native plant growing I could do outside of the traditional winter sowing season. Every species I grew here can be started from seed without cold stratification, which means missing the winter sowing window definitely doesn’t mean you have to wait another year. I’ve been keeping track of what worked, what didn’t, and what I’d change next time, and there is a LOT to talk about in the full breakdown. Do you live in Illinois and want to plant natives? Here are 3 that’ll do amazing in your landscape! 1️⃣ Prairie dropseed for grass lovers (cool tufted feel, very drought tolerant). 2️⃣ Purple coneflower/echinacea draws bees and butterflies beautifully. 3️⃣ Blue false indigo/baptisia has gorgeous flowers AND is deer-resistant! Catch the theme? Native plants have deep root systems that suck up water underground, making them incredibly drought tolerant! 🌸 Save this for your Illinois native planting! 🪴 Karen Miller | Homegrown Gardens | DM to create your luxury garden #gardening #nativeplants #illinois #droughttolerant #pollinators
We had a few people ask about the stepping stone and pathways in our garden. I found this video from August that is loaded with Monarch butterflies so I thought I would share this with all of you. Enjoy. #monarchwaystation #nativeplants #butterflygarden
If you have a meadow you’re managing and you have a problem with woody encroachment, now is the time to be planning a fall burn! #nativehabitatproject #nativeplants #grasslands #prescribedfire
A local farm installed a native wildflower “prairie strip” or patch, which is not only incredibly beautiful, but it serves many very valuable purposes. Recent research shows that converting just 10% of a crop field to prairie strips can reduce soil runoff by 90% and pollution from nitrogen runoff by 85%. It also doubles the number of pollinator species, triples pollinator abundance, and doubles the amount and diversity of birds. Native landscapes do more for us than we realize, the prairies surrounding Houston provided more flood control than we will ever be able to bring back. So let’s reintegrate it where we can #nativeplants #ecology #prairie #ecosystemservices #conservation
If grass under your trees has never worked, this is why. Webberville sedge (carex perdentata) is one of the toughest sedges we’ve found for Texas conditions. It’s native along the I-35 corridor through Texas and Oklahoma, which means it knows this climate. Sedges in general are your go-to grass alternative for shady spots, but this one has a wider range than most. Part sun to shade is where it really shines – low maintenance, great texture, minimal help from you. It’ll handle full sun too, though it’ll want some regular water to look its best there. Use it as a turf substitute, a matrix plant in place of mulch, or anywhere grass has given up on you. Mow it once or twice a year on a high setting, at least 4 inches, and that’s about all it asks. Right plant, right place. This one fits a lot of places. #NativePlants #TexasLandscaping #DFWGardening #NativeSedge #LawnAlternative
