People think NICU medicine is all machines, medications, and dramatic interventions. But the most important thing we do is much simpler. Grow the baby. #NICU #neonatologist #prematurebaby #growth #newborn
This week I’m tired… but the only way to push back on internet misinformation is to keep showing up with good science, even when it’s uncomfortable. In the NICU, I watch parents move mountains for their babies. They say yes to complex, invasive interventions with limited data because the alternative is unthinkable. And that makes sense: love makes you brave. What’s hard to reconcile is seeing that same bravery stop when it comes to vaccines: interventions with decades of safety data and a proven ability to prevent death. Not because the science is weaker, but because the internet is louder. This isn’t about judgment or winning an argument. It’s about naming the disconnect and asking ourselves where trust gets built… and where it gets quietly eroded. If you’re overwhelmed by the noise too, you’re not alone. I’ll keep showing up with evidence, context, and compassion, because these conversations matter, and the babies always deserve better than misinformation. . . . . . #NICU #NICUmedicine #Neonatology #Neonatologist #womeninmedicine

Premature Baby — Spoon Feeding vs Bottle Feeding Why spoon feeding is preferred over bottle feeding? Premature babies have an immature brain and oro-motor system. The coordination of suck–swallow–breath is not fully developed in early weeks. Because of this: ❌ Bottle Feeding — Why not recommended first Bottle flow is fast and continuous, which premature baby cannot control. Baby may choke, cough, stop breathing due to poor coordination. Higher risk of aspiration (milk entering lungs) → can lead to pneumonia. Can cause nipple confusion — baby may refuse mother’s breast later because bottle is easier. Increases risk of overfeeding, colic, vomiting and abdominal distension. ✔️ Spoon / Pallada / Cup Feeding — Why preferred Milk comes slowly and in controlled drops — baby can swallow safely. Supports safe feeding without choking even when suck reflex is weak. Encourages breastfeeding later — no nipple confusion. Baby controls how much to drink → reduces colic and vomiting. Hygienic and easy to clean compared to bottle → lower infection risk. Simple takeaway for parents 🩺 For premature babies, spoon / pallada / cup feeding is safer than bottle because it protects breathing, prevents aspiration and supports breastfeeding success later. Understanding maternal-fetal and neonatal physiology is key when considering neonatal resuscitation. Any baby that is struggling to breathe or not breathing needs more than what the placenta or umbilical cord can give in those first crucial minutes of life. #greenscreenvideo #greenscreen #neonatalresuscitationprogram #neonatalresuscitation #delayedcordclamping #nrp #obgyn #mfm #neonatologist #respiratorydistress #neonate
