Comment ROPE to get more simple OG tools like this! 🎉 As a former teacher and an Orton Gillingham trainer I know how overwhelming it can feel to teach reading without the right tools. ✨That is why I am on a mission to bring simplified and affordable Orton Gillingham resources to every teacher and every classroom.✨ This blending rope is one of my favorite ways to help students move past robotic reading and into confident, fluent blending. It is multisensory low prep and rooted in the Science of Reading. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Reading teachers need strategies that work in real time and this one does exactly that! #ortonGillingham #scienceofreading #readingteachers #structuredliteracy #blendingpractice
This little Post-it trick is phonics gold. 😍 It takes 2 minutes to set up—and gives students tons of practice blending sounds. Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Write your target skill on a Post-it and stick it in the center. (Think: A for short A words, EE for vowel teams, etc.) 2️⃣ Add beginning or ending sounds on Post-its around it. 3️⃣ Students build words by combining sounds—real or nonsense—to get that practice in. 💡 Struggling readers? Have them line up the Post-its in a straight row underneath to make blending easier. 👉 Save this now so you don’t forget it later! #phonemicawareness #ortongillingham #ortongillinghaminstruction #scienceofreading #elementaryteacher
Not all “early readers” help kids actually learn to read.📚 As an SLP trained in Orton-Gillingham, I always recommend decodable books—they match how kids learn to read, step by step. 😍 Picture books and leveled readers often expect kids to guess. Decodables build real reading skills.🙌🏼 My favorite picks are linked in my Amazon storefront! Comment “📚” for the link!
Ever wonder what a year of Orton-Gillingham growth really looks like? From day one to the final lesson, this student’s OG notebook tells a story—of phonograms mastered, syllables decoded, morphology explored, and progress tracked. I organize the notebook with sections like—new phonograms, syllable types, grammar, handwriting, morphology, and progress monitoring—not just for clarity, but as a powerful tool for lesson planning, student support, and parent conferences. My students refer back to them during lessons if they need a reminder of a previous concept. These notebooks aren’t just binders… they’re working resources, confidence boosters, and cherished keepsakes. Start building a “Book of Knowledge” with your students! Try it out, and let me know how it goes! #OrtonGillingham #DyslexiaSupport #StructuredLiteracy #MultisensoryTeaching #LiteracyNotebook #ReadingIntervention #OGNotebook #EndOfYearWrapUp #ExplicitPhonicsInstruction #MorphologyMatters #ProgressMonitoring #ParentTeacherCommunication #TheInstructionHub #BookOfKnowledge
⭐️Before kids can do this, they need a grasp on the difference between open and closed syllables. An open syllable ends in a vowel, and that means the vowel will be long. A closed syllable, ends in a consonant and the vowel will be short. (There are other syllable types, but we aren’t worried about those now.) 1️⃣First kids mark the vowels with the letter V and the consonants between with the letter C. 2️⃣ I first teach my students that when there is only one continent between two vowels we first try splitting the word after the vowel. That will give us an open syllable with a long vowel (like “open” or “belong”). 3️⃣ But if that creates a word that doesn’t make sense, we simply stay flexible and split the word after the consonant, which will change the vowel sound and give us a word we know. It sounds complicated, but the kids love this because it unlocked so many words for them. 🎊 #ortongillingham #syllables #firstgradeteacher #learntoread
✨ Spelling/Phonics Review ✨ ➡️ Comment “spinner” for the links. Sometimes the simplest activities are the most powerful. Students spin the wheel to land on an @imse_og spelling pattern we’ve already learned, then write a word that follows that pattern. That’s it. Simple. Focused. Effective. They can use their reference notebooks (filled with all of our anchor charts!) to jog their memory if needed. But here’s the best part… As the year goes on, they need those notebooks less and less. 🙌 That’s when you know the learning is sticking. Not memorizing for a test… but truly understanding patterns. Explicit instruction ➡️ practice ➡️ retrieval ➡️ independence. And they think they’re just playing a game. 😉 #teachertips #phonics #teachersofinstagram #ortongillingham fyp

Teaching Heart Words! 💖 Whether a word is decodable or includes an irregular part, we should explicitly teach high frequency words using orthographic mapping. OM is “the mental process we use to permanently store words for immediate, effortless retrieval.” (Kilpatrick, 2015). Basically, it’s the process in the brain that turns new words into words we know “by heart.” Use our 100 flashcards with practice OM worksheet (with matching Google Slides & teacher notes) to teach kids some of the most common high frequency words. 💖 Comment “Heart Words” and we’ll message you the link to this resource! #heartwords #scienceofreading #orthographicmapping #ortongillingham #ortongillinghamteachers #readingteachers
🌟 Quick Blending Tip! Instead of isolating sounds or segmenting them, SLIDE them together. 🛝 It helps them process the word as a whole and connect the sounds together! Segmenting or chopping sounds to try to read words can make it difficult for kids to blend sounds together! Another additional tip is to start with words that begin with continuous sounds! That makes the sliding process easier! 💬 Comment “slide” to get my list of CVC words organized by continuous beginning sounds to make planning for this super simple! #phonics #dyslexia #strugglingreaders #scienceofreading #spelling #structuredliteracy #homeschool #primaryteacher #ortongillingham #homeschoolmom
