Scientists turn plastic bottles into Parkinson’s drug
🧠 A new review by scientists indicates that plastic particles in the body could be crossing the blood-brain barrier and promoting the formation of protein “clumps” found in those with Parkinson’s Disease. 🔎 It’s important to note that the review included studies of animals. Scientists are calling for further research. 🔬 Studies continue to show that plastic is not without harm. We need to turn off the plastic tap and use materials that are safe and regenerative — system-wide. Source: ScienceAlert.com and npj Parkinson's Disease. Scientists in Edinburgh have developed a way to turn used plastic bottles into a drug used to treat Parkinson’s disease by using bacteria. Researchers say it is the first time a natural biological process has been used to transform plastic waste into a drug for a neurological condition. The breakthrough was made by a team at the University of Edinburgh, who used engineered E.coli bacteria to convert molecules from plastic into L-DOPA – the most commonly prescribed medication for Parkinson’s. Around 166,000 people in the UK live with the condition, which affects movement and can cause symptoms including tremors. In a laboratory in the Scottish capital, scientists have been able to take molecules from broken down plastic bottles and convert them into the drug through a series of biological reactions. Professor Stephen Wallace from the University of Edinburgh said: “The technology that has been developed here is called engineering biology. It has been pioneered by researchers in the UK and the University of Edinburgh is a leader in that field. “It redesigns biology to do things that it’s never really had to do before. Normally, we think of using microbes to make things like beer and cheese and we can reprogramme these microbes to do things they’ve never done before. #news #tech #science #shorts #medicine
What if plastic waste could become medicine? A new study shows engineered microbes can turn PET (like water bottles) into L-DOPA, a frontline medication for Parkinson’s disease. Not a solution to plastic—but a glimpse of how biology might reshape both waste and manufacturing. Early—but opens the door to many more possibilities. Can a Parkinson’s disease drug also reduce our plastic waste? Dr Zoe explains how a new drug called L-DOPA could help reduce plastic waste whilst also treating people with Parkinson’s.
April is more than just a month—it’s a movement. 💙 Parkinson’s Awareness Month is about shining a light on the millions of people and families navigating life with Parkinson’s every single day. It’s about education, early detection, innovation, and most importantly—community. From subtle voice changes to movement challenges, Parkinson’s shows up differently in everyone. And that’s exactly why awareness matters. The more we understand, the better we can support, detect, and build solutions that truly change lives. This month, let’s amplify voices, share stories, and push the conversation forward. Because awareness isn’t passive—it drives action. #ParkinsonsAwarenessMonth #Parkinsons #NeuroHealth #BrainHealth #InnovationForGood DigitalHealth RaiseAwareness
Environmental factors are mounting for health related diseases. @davidperlmutter didn’t mention this but I urge you to look at what chemicals you are using to wash your clothes in, what do you wash your dishes in? If you are still using TIDE swap it out and try @branchbasics or @mollys_suds We don’t have control over everything but we do have control over what we wash our clothes in and as he said these dry cleaning chemicals. Vote with your $$$ folks! Vote with your $$$
Researchers found that certain environmental contaminants in drinking water, particularly chemicals linked to industrial activity and agriculture, may increase the likelihood of developing the neurological condition over time. These substances can potentially affect the nervous system when people are exposed to them for long periods. Parkinson's disease is a progressive condition that affects movement, often causing symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental exposures contribute to the disease. The study highlights the importance of monitoring water quality and improving environmental protections to reduce potential health risks. Experts also emphasize that more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between drinking water and neurological diseases. For individuals, maintaining awareness of local water safety reports and using appropriate filtration systems when necessary may help reduce exposure to harmful contaminants. While the findings are still being studied further, the research reinforces the idea that environmental health and human health are closely connected. 💧
What could be driving the increased incidence of Parkinson’s disease? Rates of Parkinson’s disease have been increasing, and the trend has raised important questions among researchers and clinicians. While aging plays a role, it does not fully explain the sharp rise that has been observed. A growing body of research is pointing toward environmental exposures as a potential contributor. Understanding the environmental factors that influence neurological health is becoming an increasingly important part of the conversation.
