Posturing is a form of stimming, and can range from holding body limbs in unusual ways, e.g holding their hands, fingers and toes in unusual positions, arching their back, finger splaying and observing things with “side eyes”. Finger/ hand posturing 👐 Cleo’s main forms of stimming is her pacing and her finger posturing. ☝️It took a while to notice but she actually finger postures constantly, like all the time. The arms are bent in toward the body and the wrists and fingers are bent and held on the chest. This type of posturing is a sign of severe damage in the brain. No im not flipping you off. This is called dystonic/ spastic posturing. It happens when I have super high muscle tone. And if I activate my muscles to reach for something or do anything they like to posture. Many times people with neurological conditions have postures that can look “weird” or even look rude. But it’s extensor tone and dystonia being rude. Without them I wouldn’t have this issue. So next time you see a person with a disability sitting like this, it may not be flipping you off.
