A BTS look at my QGIS map design workflow. Let’s map urban green space accessibility!
When mapping green infrastructure, the biggest challenge is making sure the final design doesn’t look like a chaotic data dump. In this spatial analysis workflow, we are taking raw OpenStreetMap data and turning it into a clean, professional urban design layout using only open-source tools.
Here is my QGIS workflow for this map:
✔️Base Map Styling: Setting up a minimal background with grey buildings, drop shadows, and white transport networks to keep the focus on nature.
✔️Land Use Symbology: Merging the urban fabric (residential, commercial, retail) into one neutral background color. I use textures, like green stripes for woodlands and blue dots for agriculture, to differentiate natural areas.
✔️Urban Parks: Filtering POI data to isolate parks and applying a clean green style.
✔️The “Dissolve”Tool: Generating 250m and 500m buffers often creates cluttered, overlapping circles. Using the Dissolve tool merges them into one seamless, readable accessibility area!
✔️Context & Framing: Adding unclipped water features outside the boundary for a dynamic layout, finished with a boundary drop shadow.

How to Clip Raster by Mask Layer in QGIS 🗺️ | GIS Quick Tutorial
Learn how to clip a raster layer using a study area boundary in QGIS with the **Clip Raster by Mask Layer** tool. In this quick GIS tutorial, you'll learn how to select your input raster, choose a polygon mask layer, set the output file, and extract raster data within your study area boundary.
This technique is useful for clipping DEMs, satellite imagery, land use land cover maps, rainfall maps, NDVI maps, and other raster datasets for GIS mapping, terrain analysis, watershed management, and remote sensing applications.

Most GIS students can make a map.
Very few can prove what changed on the ground, and by how much.
That's the skill employers, researchers and thesis supervisors are looking for. 🛰️
💬 Comment QGIS to get a free live session and recorded class
In our upcoming QGIS + Google Earth Engine batch, you won't just watch tutorials.
You'll complete a real lab project:
📍 Georeference a historical map in QGIS (GCPs, transformations, RMSE < 1 pixel)
🌍 Connect Google Earth Engine to QGIS with Python
🌱 Build a cloud-free Sentinel-2 composite and NDVI for your own study area
📊 Detect and explain real land-cover change, then submit a graded report
Who it's for:
→ Geography, environmental science and urban planning students
→ Researchers working on LULC, change detection or a thesis
→ Professionals moving into remote sensing
What you get:
✔️ Live hands-on classes + recordings
✔️ Step-by-step guide PDFs and Google Classroom assignments
✔️ Code templates you can reuse in your own projects
✔️ Certificate on completion
