I remember that between 2011 and 2012, as I was discovering contemporary art, I went through a period of intense exploration — filled with doubts, revelations, and questions. It was during that time that I came across a quote by Andy Warhol that deeply resonated with me:
“An artist is someone who creates things people don’t need, but who thinks, for some reason or another, it would be a good idea to give them.”
Those words struck me. They gave meaning to something I had been carrying silently within me: the need to create, even without apparent necessity — simply because it might move someone, illuminate something, or just make sense, somewhere, for someone.
These gates, I salvaged them from second-hand markets in Kinshasa, where discarded gates from destroyed homes are sold — homes made obsolete or taken down by land disputes. The machines that demolish these houses are the same ones used by industrial companies to dig into the Congolese soil, in the name of modernity — a reality for the global world, but an illusion for the Congolese.
After the bulldozers pass, people come — armed with pickaxes, hammers, and chisels. They sift through the rubble, extracting what remains, fragments to resell. The same tools, the same gestures as those used by artisanal miners in Congo.
“Here, extraction is a means of surviving collapse. From the chaos of ruins, we extract shards of a still imaginable future.”
