#ThrowbackThursday to the YAGP 2026 International Dance School Festival featuring @nanoha_shigeoka Nanoha Shigeoka and @millandba Millán De Benito from the @royalballetschool Royal Ballet School mesmerizing the audience with their contagious stage presence, immaculate technique, and wonderful chemistry in their gorgeous performance of “Anima Mea.”✨⭐️
Anima Mea was created by Royal Ballet School 2026 graduate Millán de Benito when he was an Upper School 2nd Year student for The Royal Ballet School’s 2025 Frederick Ashton Emerging Choreographer. From its earliest origins, The Royal Ballet School has nurtured its students’ creative voices alongside their ballet technique and artistry, and students today are encouraged to choreograph from their first year at the School (aged 12) through the Ninette de Valois Choreographic Programme. As a partner school, The Royal Ballet School was delighted that Millán could bring Anima Mea to the International Dance School Festival, showcasing the vibrant creativity thriving at the School today.

One thing we all have in common in this video (and that was only 1/4 of the people who attended on the day!) was that we all struggled to access inclusive ballet classes. It’s taken *a lot* of hard work but we now run inclusive ballet sessions both in person at The Royal Ballet School and live streamed on top of our regular online sessions.
There are some incredible organisations who have paved the way in inclusive dance and some amazing sessions running around the country. I certainly hope 2026 is time for a real breakthrough for the ballet dancers on wheels ♿️

Meet Rupert, one of the youngest stars in this year’s The Nutcracker! 🧒
While many of the children in the production joined us through their training at the Royal Ballet School or Elmhurst Ballet School, Rupert came to the Company via the open auditions. Thanks to that opportunity, he’s now taking to the stage with Birmingham Royal Ballet.
Hear how Rupert and his mother are finding the experience of Rupert performing with the Company.

Dancers, let’s talk about self-comparison.
I think a lot of dancers, including myself, have experienced that feeling of comparing yourself to the dancers around you, whether that be dancers in your class, studio or company, competitions or social media.
Healthy comparison can actually be a really positive thing. It can motivate you, push you and inspire you to improve. When I was at The Royal Ballet School, being surrounded by so many talented dancers was a huge part of my own development. You can look at another dancer, see their progress and let that inspire you to work harder.
The problem is when comparison starts to become about “why them and not me?”
You see another dancer achieving something, whether that be winning an award or prize, and question why you aren’t achieving the same thing. You see a dancer being cast for something and think, “why not me?” You see a dancer do four pirouettes and think, “why not me?” There are many examples of comparison young dancers and in fact any dancers can face. This can happen during training, but also throughout a professional career with auditions, castings and productions.
When comparison starts affecting your self-worth and self-belief, it can become really damaging. You start questioning your ability instead of focusing on your own progress.
Every dancer is different. We all have different strengths, different challenges and different journeys.
Trust your journey. Trust your process.
Let the dancers around you inspire you, push you and motivate you, but don’t let their journey and progress define your own. 🤍
“Effortlessness is an illusion”
Principal dancer @annaroseosullivan reflects on the quiet work behind every performance, from the daily discipline of the studio to the responsibility of carrying the contributions of everyone involved in a production.
She also shares how growing up through The Royal Ballet School shaped her path, and why the appearance of ease on stage is built on years of dedication and perseverance.
