Last night, designer David Tlale made his SA Fashion Week (SAFW) comeback at the Johannesburg City Library with a collection aptly dubbed “Restoration”. South African Fashion Week celebrated the next generation of fashion visionaries with its annual Student Competition — now in its 19th year. Partnering with 24 fashion colleges and universities nationwide, SAFW continues to spotlight fresh creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation at the start of young designers’ journeys. This year’s brief challenged students to reimagine a 100% cotton size-34 shirt using techniques like dyeing, pleating, distressing, or embroidery — all while keeping sustainability front and center. In collaboration with Hyde Park Corner, the 2025 Student Competition Exhibition brought together 17 exceptional finalists whose work captures the spirit and future of South African fashion.
