I love how fashion repeats itself, like when @lauraashleyusa revived the Edwardian look in the 1970s and now that cottage core vibe is back again. Today I’m stitching up #voguepatterns #v1939. And because I’m a thrifty girlie, I’m making magic out of a vintage sheet I bought secondhand for under $2. To really go the extra Edwardian mile, I’m using insertion lace - let me show you how it’s done. First, I trimmed the ladder lace down to just the center section. Next I carefully positioned it to the right side of the fabric and used a running stitch on both sides to secure it. Now comes the fidgety part - with extreme care, cut the fabric between your stitch lines. Press back away from lace. On right side, use a small zigzag stitch on lace edges. Again, from wrong side, very carefully trim any excess fabric. I love this delicate technique and it’s absolutely worth the time! This piece feels so *ME* - I love it. 1. Start with scrappy fabric – Don’t sacrifice your nice material first. Use that random tote bag from a festival in 2016. Trust me, mistakes hurt less on freebies. 2. Pins are your best mates – I think of them as tiny traffic cones telling your fabric to stay in your lane 3. The seam ripper is also your best friend. Messed up? No stress. Every sewer has a love-hate situationship with their seam ripper. Unpicking needs to be normalised. 4. Iron like your life depends on it – I never used to press my seams and my god does it make a difference. Pressing makes your project look 10x more professional. Wrinkly fabric is giving Year 9 DT class energy. 5. Patience > Speed – I’ve learnt sewing machines are basically toddlers: go too fast, and they throw a tantrum.
