I’ve loved @deftones since high school. There’s just something about the noise they make—the raw guitars, the drums, the vocals. It’s chaos and beauty all wrapped into one. Funny thing is, their music weirdly slaps when paired with Great White Sharks. I don’t know why, but my brain just wires it that way. This reel’s one of those magic moments—Guadalupe lit just right, a white shark cruising like it owns the place, and those little yellow-tailed mackerel (or jack mackerel? I don’t know—fish with vibes) just cruising alongside. Everything just fell into place. P.S. @iphotographsharks can you remind me what kind of mackerel these are again? Before the internet decides to yell at me, I’m outsourcing this one to you. If you’re watching this and you’ve got fish questions, ask him! He actually loves that stuff. I only have a couple of spots left for our Mako and Blue shark expedition in Baja (Cabo) April 5-9th. It’s so hard to find pelagic sharks like this and Cabo offers us this wonderful opportunity of crystal-clear, waters and lots of sharks. We’ll spend three full long days out on the ocean in the water with these animals, giving you maximum time to observe and photograph them. Will also have shark research lecture, and I’m on hand to talk about shark behaviour, shark, photography, and anything cameras! A curious tiger shark gives my camera a nibble before moving on. POV - You’re a Whale shark smashing a bait ball! Some old gold from the archives. Not cinematic, completely overexposed and impossible to colour grade from an old photography camera. But something worth watching! This day we had 4 Whale sharks simultaneously charging through a bait ball, mouths wide open gouging on copious amounts of fish each time. This clip shows how close by the sharks were passing me, and for the first time in my many years of interacting with Whale Sharks, I felt like I had to watch my back with them. After all there is no redirecting a 9 metre Whale Shark as it powers, pec fins down, towards you! The Ningaloo at it’s wildest.
