Here is the importance of always working toward the baseball. In the first clip I sat back on my heels and moved sideways to field the ball resulting in a bad in-between hop which I ended up bobbling and making an error. In the second clip I got a very similar grounder. This time I decided to work toward the baseball and keep my momentum forward. This allowed me to shorten up that hop and turn it into a short hop making it an easier catch. He has the unique ability to look nonchalant and make the game look easy. Here a ball is smashed at him at 100 mph. He reacts the way he does because of his pre-pitch prep. Relax the body with breath. Stay loose in the arms. Keep the body moving. He then lands on time. Securing the baseball first as his main priority. Then moving to his second priority, ensuring a good throw. And although he can throw the ball 90+ across the diamond, he uses his legs so they can carry it with clean backspin. Aware of his internal clock, he utilizes a four-step footwork pattern so the throw stays true. Then he maintains his momentum, following the throw so in the last milliseconds his fingers interact with the ball they do so with neutral pressure. This was awesome to watch.
